What foods do you indulge in, despite your better judgement?

Roasted beef bone marrow, on crostini with a vinegary, garlicky, salty chimichurri sauce.

I don’t make it at home because you need a band saw to cut open the bones lengthwise before roasting them. But I order it at a local restaurant we like very much.

It’s so rich and unctuous and I feel so… ugh!.. the next day. But I’ll do it to myself again a month later.

Well, if you only eat it every month or so, that much bread probably isn’t doing much damage.

For me, it’s beer & popcorn. I go the whole week without indulging and I get to my Friday and it’s like “You know what? Fuck this.” Doesn’t help that there’s a liquor store in my block.

Anchovies, sardines, mussels, herring, mackerel, roe, beer. You know, the avoid list for gout.

Bacon… With salt on top…

It’s sad, and possibly very dangerous, but a couple of years ago, I just gave up fighting to keep a low-sodium diet. Hell with it, sez I, and pour on the Morton.

Steak, frites and red wine.

I have never heard of such a thing but I’m intrigued. In what part of the world is this a thing?

I long ago gave up feeling guilty about eating anything. Well mostly.* Ever since I found out that Arby’s Curly Fries are available in my grocery store freezer case, they’ve become a regular inhabitant in my freezer.

*I have long subscribed to the notion that there is no such thing as a “bad for you food.” There’s only a “bad for you diet.” So as long as the occasional Bad Foods are both infrequent and interspersed with lots of Good Foods, no harm done.

Wait, what? You put salt on bacon?
I have a friend who automatically salts everything, no matter what, even pizza. I find this incomprehensible. Then again, she is older than me and apparently healthy.

I saw Marrow Bones on the menu of a trendy little Pittsburgh restaurant, Legume Bistro. They had just sold the last order. Looking around, I saw three diners enjoying them. The three diners were very, very old and appeared to really be enjoying themselves.

Yah, I googled and found plenty of recipes but am still unclear about the ethnic origins.

I buy them for my dogs.

Sad, isn’t it? But…yep! I salt my pizza too. I like a visible white crust of salt on top of my food. “Snow on the ground.”

Is there a real scientific/medical reason that some people crave salt so much? I’m far from the only one!

Anyway…I stopped drinking 11 years ago, so I’ve put away that harmful element of my diet!

Chicharones aka pork rinds. There is no bag smalll enough to fulfill my craving once I start and no amount of Pepto to make the bloating and intestinal agony go away…especially good with beer. The rinds, not the pepto (too pink and frothy).

Not a single food, but:

One of the Chinese buffets near me recently changed owners, and vastly improved their food. I go only about once a month; the next will be Christmas day, after the traditional movie (the premiere of Into the Woods).

Any butcher will saw bones if you ask, although some may charge. It also sounds to me like it’s probably an Italian dish.

For me, it’s anything chocolate. My waistline DOES NOT like it.

As for salt, I need extra sodium, so that’s not an issue for me.

Ribeye steak. And cake. Chocolate cake.

Steak, pasta and rice. Probably drink too much skim milk too.

My God, that’s disgusting.

My indulgence is Haagen Dazs cookie dough ice cream. And Cheesecake.

I could eat that stuff all day, every day. But I don’t. Very often.

And booze chocolates. I could eat enough to get drunk.

It’s a classic French dish, but it has been a very popular/trendy menu item in the US for about the past 5-10 years.

I’m a salter too. I have to be careful when I cook that I don’t oversalt, especially soups.
But my worst example is cream cheese. I know it makes my gall bladder act up if I eat more than a tiny bit, but I’m always trying to see if I can tolerate a little bit more.

I absolutely love bone marrow, and sometimes get beef bones at the supermarket just to cook it up (you can boil it in the bone, even if it’s not sawed lengthwise, aside from roasting and grilling and probably other methods). And I feel no guilt over it – it’s very nutritious, if also very fatty. I don’t even put it on bread – I’ll eat it with a little spoon, right out of the bone.

Ever had oxtail soup? My gf makes it a couple times a year. A local farm saves her a cutup tail when they slaughter. It takes a couple days to make, and I assume the marrow is a big part of its rich, complex goodness.
