Tim Eriksen and Riley Baugus - The Cuckoo
It appears on the Cold Mountain soundtrack. I absolutely love this style of music and was wondering if it was possible to give it any classification beyond ‘folk/trad.’ Is it bluegrass?
It’s got elements of bluegrass, certainly, but the song structure is a little looser than most bluegrass these days. That could just be the performers at that time, though.
I’d be tempted, if I had to get specific to label it Appalachian Bluegrass from the vocal delivery but that’s really picking nits. I wouldn’t be surprised to find this in a record store under either ‘Folk’ or ‘Bluegrass’.
Sounds a lot like Hobart Smith.
Janis Joplin borrows some of the lyrics from that in her song “Jack of Diamonds.”
