What good is a Bor Gullet?

In Rogue One, Saw Gerrera made a big deal about having the pilot’s mind read by the Bor Gullet - No lie is safe!
But, even after the slimy critter sucks all the thoughts out of Bodhi Rook’s mind, Saw still thinks it’s all a trap. So, why bother if you don’t believe it?
(Not to mention the expense of keeping something that huge alive and healthy just in case you might need it).

R1 underwent extensive recuts and reshoots before it was released; I’ve always felt that that scene (along with several others) was a remnant of some abandoned plot thread.

I agree…that part is very clumsy.
But I think Saw still not believing it was meant to show that he had been lost to his own zealotry.

I’d interpret it as just another exmple of poor Hollywood writing.

“Our way is blocked by an impenetrable force field.”
“How impenetrable?”
“Legend has it that the best races of the galaxy spent 1 million years trying to defeat it, and failed!”
“So we have no chance?”
“Well, if I don’t stop for lunch, I should have it done this afternoon.”

I’m with Push You Down. I think the fact that Saw Gerrera makes a such a big deal about the bor gullet only to instantly dismiss it when it doesn’t reveal the truth he wants to find is the entire point of the scene. He’s a damaged person. Physically, of course, but even more so mentally. He’s fundamentally broken. He’s a paranoid fanatic, the dark side of the bright and shiny and idealistic Rebellion. I actually think it’s an effective scene, that reveals how far gone Saw Gerrera truly is.
