Rogue One - seen it thread. (open spoilers)

My second Rogue One thread in a couple days, but hey, it’s a big deal! Anyone had a chance to see it yet? If so, share your thoughts. You can avoid spoilers if you like, but you do not have to.

I have not yet seen it, but will soon. For those that have seen it, how intense is it? I have a 6 and 8 year old(both just had birthdays) and I want to know if it is OK for them. They did see Force Awakens with me a year ago.

I’ve got my ticket for tomorrow 7pm.

One of my friends asked me to let him know if it was appropriate for his 6 year old son. As I was watching Dirk Gently with my 11 year old daughter, sometime between the brutal murders and copious swearing, I realized I might not be the best judge of what is appropriate for children.

Well, let us know, anyway. I’m curious. I have read both yes and no.

10 AM showing for me. I wimped out of the midnight showing.

I went to see the midnight showing last night - as a consequence, I’m a bit fuzzy this morning.

Overall - good. The first act is a bit clunky, but once things start rolling, it gets very good very quickly. Lots of “easter egg” cameos, but they are logical, within the framework of the overall saga. Bail Organa, Red Leader, Biggs, are all where one would expect them to be. Their presence doesn’t seem forced at all.

I have the feeling it would benefit from a few fewer characters, but I’m not sure who could be cut or combined to improve the overall flow. There just isn’t time to flesh all of them out, unfortunately, especially Chirrut (the blind Force disciple) and his sidekick, Baze. Possibly, if they’d condensed the “fetch quest” aspect of it, they could have spent more time on the people.
Ah, the fetch quest. Go here to find one thing, go there to find another, then end up at the final confrontation. Familiar, especially if you’re an MMO player!

Tudyk as K-2SO is a delight, and that rarest of beasts; a comic relief character who isn’t actively annoying. The others also comport themselves well.

I got a little tired of a bit of cinematography that the director seems fond of, that of things sliding out of shadow into the light. Sometimes effective, but the opening shot used this, and was downright confusing.

Some familiar characters were brought back through digital wizardry. Spoilers, right?

I thought Tarkin was generally well done, but Leia was less convincing; my wife feels the opposite. Darth Vader, of course, was done normally, and is quite chilling.

Overall, well worth staying up until 3 AM, and we’ll be seeing it again this weekend, I’m sure. I’ll give it a 7.5 out of 10.

Just got back from it.

It’s dark. It’s densely packed with a lot of back and forth. It’s fast paced. It has a lot of cameos from pre-existing characters, some expected, some unexpected, and all surprisingly well done.

Almost none of the scenes from the trailers are actually in the final movie. It seems after reshoots and editing they didn’t need them anymore, including some of the iconic shots that are the source of so much fan art.

I loved it. It does sort of feel like an extremely well made fanfilm, because it’s the sort of subject matter and time period those usually delved into, but it also does a great job of using its canonical nature to fill in some of the gaps and plot holes that have cropped up in other Star Wars movies.

Also there’s a Darth Vader scene that will make everybody very happy.

I am very upset about this movie. I wrote a short story about 15-20 years ago about the officer who was guarding the death star plans when the rebels broke in and stole them. Now my version will never be made.

In my story, the officer was in the bathroom suffering from the Empire cafeteria food when the rebels broke in. He was questioned by his superior officers, made up a huge story about a big battle, and almost succeeded in lying his way out of it. Then the superior officers looked down and saw a piece of toilet paper stuck to his shoe. Busted! So he was demoted to stormtrooper.
But stormtroopers don’t have names, just numbers, since they’re all clones, and they accidentally assigned our guy the number of a stormtrooper that had already died. So he had a lot of problems getting paychecks, medical attention, rations from the Death Star Caffeteria, etc. His roommate gave him some of his rations, and they became friends.
Over several months, he told the roommate his life story, his hopes, his dreams, etc. Only it turned out that he was getting a different roommate every week, who would get killed and replaced with another. But he didn’t notice, since they were all clones, and not only looked the same, but all liked the same music, movies, etc.
I also explained the extremely bad aim of the stormtroopers, and their inability to hit anything at all. My character was complaining to his clone roommate that his uniform didn’t fit right, since he wasn’t the same build as the clones were. But the clone told him that they screwed up when measuring the original clone and never fixed it, so none of their uniforms fit right. Especially in the shoulder area, so they had trouble aiming their laser guns correctly…

Hey now, look what I predicted.

I’m just back from seeing it. Over here the film is a 12A. The A is definitely necessary as younger audiences may not like that everyone dies.

The plot is very linear. I loved all the cameos, shout-outs etc. And yes, Tudyk is indeed a delight.

I did, however, find it sexist. By virtue of trying to not be sexist. Of all the main group of protagonists and redshirts, only the Action Girl was female.

And what is it with evil fortresses and lava?

The rings? That was a shout-out to the opening sequence of A New Hope.

A six-year old? No. They all die.

I like it. I hope Jeff Vadermakes an appearance.

That planet wasn’t named in the movie, but George Lucas had originally planned that Vader’s fortress was on a lava world called Had Abbadon. Alternatively it may have been somewhere on Mustafar.

Just got back from seeing it. I seriously enjoyed it, far more than Force Awakens actually.

Maybe it was just me, but even the dying protagonists aside, it simply felt different to the Skywalker-centric movies.

They trod a fine line on the cameo/Easter egg front, and were generally very good with it. The only one I thought was a bit groan-worthy was bumping into ‘Mr Death Sentence’ on Jedda. I agree with the poster above that Leia’s face was a bit CGI’y I thought. I was amazed at how well they did Tarkin though.

Loved the Vader scene near the end. Really shows you what he can do, but then it throws up the question of why he didn’t do the same thing when boarding the Tantive in ANH. Speaking of which, I’ll have to revisit the start if ANH, I’m not entirely sure it totally gels with the end of Rogue One. I’ve never got the feel that the Tantive was literally just fleeing from another battle, but maybe that’s just a personal impression.

The only notable thing that annoyed me a little was Donny Yen’s character, just in terms of that most tired of cliches of the blind mystic who you can’t tell is blind, until the writers make a point of it. (It probably doedn’t help I’ve been watching Marco Polo lately with the same cliche).

That’s a minor quibble in a movie I very much enjoyed.

Just got home from it. I thought it was fantastic, and my wife loved it too – better than TFA, the prequels (obviously), and maybe better than every SW movie except for Empire. I loved all the easter eggs, and it seems I missed at least a few (I didn’t see Biggs, but I did see Red and Gold Leaders).

Wow…this movie far surpassed what I hoped for. I thought it was a really fun movie. Watched the 3D version.

Pissed off Vader was amazing. I loved hearing new Vader dialogue. Although, I would have been fine if he didn’t have the “Choking on your aspirations” line. The shot of Vader watching the Blockade Runner blast away

I loved K-2S0. I got a good laugh out of a lot of his lines. Much better comic relief than C-3P0 ever was.

I really liked how they had Jyn watching the hologram of her father, and her being told how to destroy it, while the Death Star was above them getting ready to fire its test shot.

I thought the nods to the original trilogy were well done and just about right amount. The “I’ve got a Death Sentence” one was the most of a stretch…but they seemed to stop after that for a while. But then using what seemed to be alternate takes from the Original with the X and Y wing squadron leaders (even using almost the same dialogue) took me out of it a little, but right when I thought to myself if they keep these cameos up it will take me out…I don’t remember seeing any others.

This is way too much to digest, but I’m on a Star Wars high. Lots of action…no cutesy things aimed at the kids. Really good strong female leads. I loved Jyn’s character and drive…and really loved that when the rebellion told her they weren’t going to send a mission to get the plans, that bunch of rebels rebelled against the rebellion. Loved Mon Mothma, especially when she was told that an unauthorized team had taken off…and the grin she gave.

My favorite shot from the trailers was Jyn up on the platform and the TIE Fighter rising above her. Disappointed that it wasn’t in the movie.

I don’t know if I was hearing things…but did anyone else hear Saw Gerrera breathing like Vader?

Speaking of Vader…I really liked his introduction into the movie. Couldn’t really see him…completely of out the suit, in the rejuvenation tank similar to Luke after being attacked by the Wampa (speaking of which I thought I saw a Wampa and the Probot in the Imperial occupied marketplace)

OK, need to digest this more…and see if I can get tickets for another showing this weekend. Definitely need to see this in IMax.

I actually noticed Biggs. They showed him rather quick in the dog fight, and he didn’t have any lines (which is why so many of the call backs worked…they weren’t focused on)

There was definitely a probe droid, but the wampa was probably this guy, Moroff, who was one of Saw Gerrera’s gang of misfits.

Loved it. I was really impressed with the work on Tarkin, up to and including never showing him from the waist down just like in ANH. Krellic is a very different kind of villain than we see in most Star Wars media and made a great antagonist. The final scene of June and Canadian embracing before the shockwave hits was perfect.

I wonder what the face-saving they showed off here portends for the future of filmmaking. Could we soon have dead actors in starring roles?

Yeah, it was certainly resembled Vader’s breathing - the pilot had an ‘Oh crap, another one!’ look on his face when that was going on.

I didn’t notice Biggs but I loved having Red and Gold Leader back for a showing. The short appearance of the ‘original’ Red 5 was an interesting nod to ANH as well.

Apparently there were a few Rebel’s references as well: Chopper and a loud-speaker call for ‘Admiral Syndulla’ the Yavin Base and The Ghost at the final battle with the rebel fleet.

Rating wise: ESB, ANH, R1, TFA/ROTJ, AOTC, ROTS, TPM

You did an excellent job of getting every name of the new characters wrong. Well done.
