What happened in Georgia in 2020?

Why did Georgia go Democrat in 2020? Is it becoming a swing state or is it going the way of Virginia where it’s mainly Democrat?

Stacey Abrams happened.

As for the second question, one step at a time.

This is an excellent answer. Georgia is slowly turning blue but Stacey Abrams made a big difference.

It is N. Carolina that will follow Virginia in turning Blue. The Rt 95 Corridor and Raleigh, Greensboro & Charlotte are leading the way.

More properly, I should have said “Stacey Abrams happened”, in case anyone is unfamiliar with this awesome individual. Had the Republicans not fucked up by helping Kemp disenfranchise a metric shit ton of Georgians, she might have been too busy being governor to spend all of her time getting people fired up to vote this year.

Tell me more about Stacey Abrams. I could look at her wiki but I’m putting my kid to bed right now and want a good story.

Stacey Abrams is my new hero!

Rather than retreating to lick her wounds [after the 2018 loss], Abrams got to work. She founded Fair Fight, an organization dedicated to ensuring free and fair elections and has been instrumental in registering about 800,000 Georgia voters—many of whom are people of color—since 2018. Given the slim margins of victory we’re seeing in this election, it’s clear just how monumental a difference those new voters could make.

100% A fitting memorial to John Lewis too.

Sort of silly, but one of my favorite John Lewis moments (at a campaign event for Stacey Abrams’ gubernatorial run):

And this is a Stacey Abrams jam from back in the day (my link starts at a perfect place in the video, but feel free to go back to the beginning).

you could say that democracy happened in Georgia. centuries of barriers both overt and covert to limit voting to white males has been chipped away at. When it becomes one person, one vote with easy access to voting, then the voting across the US is trending more liberal and less conservative.

Stacey Abrams is wonderful. I think she will be president one day.

Indeed.
