What happened on Straight dope?

This is on top of all threads in About This Message Board; it’s also an announcement posted in every forum.

Unfortunately, if the bug is manifesting for someone, they won’t see the announcement about it, nor the half-dozen other threads pointing out the same problem.

The Dilithium crystals need replacing.

Seriously? A two week old non informative, blanket statement, is your go to response when your paying customers want some kind of time line for a fix?

So what? We should apply to the new owners in hope of something, anything that’s actually responsive?

This very thread, now does not even show the OP, the search engine has not worked in ages, the ‘show unread threads’ feature is useless, and when I opened this board it showed exactly 6 threads. MPSIMS just showed only one!

You charge people money, I’m sorry, but you owe people better than throwing your arms in the air and declaring, “Garsh, we don’t know anything!” If that’s the truth of the matter than just point us to who, exactly, amongst the new owners we should apply to in hopes of getting minimal information about when we can expect this real or imaginary addressing of the boards issues.

Since I re upped for a two year stint, the board has truly gone for a crap. Nothing works as it should, it’s one irritation after another, I get logged out often, etc. Making your paying customers, feel the fool for having paid, seems bad business to me.

You must be joking, right?

:gives elbows a round of applause:

It would be bad enough if all you had were average laymen like us who do not pay for this board. But you guys are getting paid! Not just from us guests having to suffer the advertisements, but actual money from paid members.

You guys really need to get your shit together - at least let us know of a deadline by which this board will be back working properly.

When the going get tough…

sigh The tough get going!

(At this point it’s nearly impossible for me to post anything but a drive by, since even that generally times me out and makes me type my user name and password back in, sometimes 3-4 times, and sometimes I never get my post through)

A slight improvement trick you could do: When you type in a new post (or edit an existing one) and click on “Submit” or “Preview” and you get a sign-in screen: Instead of typing in your name and password again, just hit your browser’s “Back” button and then click on “Submit” or “Preview” again.

You might still have to try it several times before it works, but still, that’s quicker than typing in your name and password over and over and over.

(This seems to work in any case where the “Back” button will take you back to a page where you were logged in.)

Yeah, I didn’t see it either until I had to go through a weird song-and-dance just to get this forum to come up. I thought I was having browser problems or some such issue.

Turns out: nope.

What I do (even for New Posts when it’s working normally) is, once you get a good, updated page, don’t leave it. Open all threads in new windows.

it is like frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen, frozen in time, unfrozen …

This is actually Gladys’ vacation week, that’s the reason the board is a little slow. You don’t know Gladys, as they don’t really want this spread about, but she is the one that actually sorts out the threads and gets the posts put in the correct locations, and makes sure everyone is logged in and out correctly, and of course does all the searches for everyone. That is, when she can find her glasses, or not on coffee break. It’s not that she takes long breaks, but you know her office is way in the back, by the mop sink, and of course the coffee maker is in the front where visitors are so it takes a while for her to walk up front. The doctor allows her one cup in the morning and that’s it. Is one of those new-fangled machines, the kind with buttons and such, that she’s not used to, unlike the one she got as an anniversary present and she had just started working here. It was around the time they were thinking of switching from AOL and they needed someone to take over the work that the AOL folks used to do. Gladys just finished secretarial school learning about those computer machines and thought it would be fun as she was always good sorting and filing. Anyway, Gladys is on vacation this week and part of next, visiting her sister Mabel, that’s the sister that’s out of town and you have to take the train to get to, and a taxi to get to the retirement home, not the other sister Clarissa who lives down the street and a block over from her and comes for Sunday Dinner the first Sunday of the month. Clarissa also makes the best pies, which is worth going to Sunday Dinner for, not that you’d ever get invited to their Sunday Dinners because Gladys likes to keep work and home separated, just like her late husband did before he retired. But since Gladys is on vacation, Harriet from Accounting fills in for her (Alfred from Sales takes over for Harriet, as you know this is a slow month for both Harriet and Alfie, after the big Charter Members re-upping rush in February). It takes Harriet a few days to remember the difference between searching and posting, as the two buttons are next to each other, which is why the search function is slower than usual. Now you may be wondering why Alfie just doesn’t take over for Gladys, but you young people that rush about probably don’t remember the winter he was put on the job because Gladys couldn’t make it in because of the weather and Harriet was there but she was doing the end-of-year accounting and she was going to keep an eye on Alfie to make sure he does it right. The official word was because of the servers or something like that, and that’s only because Alfie is really a nice guy and it really wasn’t his place to do the work he wasn’t properly trained to do. If you ask him you probably won’t say anything, but every year at the office party (the real office party, not the one the moderators go to) when things get mellow he swears he pressed the buttons exactly how the instructions Gladys had called in to Kaitlynn the receptionist (yes, she spells it with a K and two n’s) and Kaitlynn says she wrote it down just like Gladys said, but in retrospect it might not have been the save/search/post instructions but the instructions for that new-fangled coffee maker.

TLDR: it’s the TRS-80

For the last few days the Boards only showed me threads from 6/10 but if I actually clicked on a thread I would see all the posts in it up to today. Logging out (which apparently clears all cookies) and logging back in seems to have fixed it.

You guys might want to check this out if you haven’t already: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/announcement.php?f=2

Finally, we can hope for a fix.

Well, it’s good to know it’s not just my computer doing weird things.

Also, quotes only seem to work for me occasionally. They worked on this post but haven’t been working in CS for me, no matter whether I click “quote” or “multiquote”.

Kzbre5m, I like you.

I get that too. Seems intermittent at least for me. Just keep trying until it behaves itself.

It’s a step in the right direction certainly. But there was a whole lot of, ‘we don’t know if this will fix it…’, and ‘it could take days or weeks’. Makes it sound like this work is being done by a 15yr old on his down time from playing video games. I don’t know many IT pros who work that way, is all.

I too hope for only the best results, have all my fingers crossed. And I do appreciate finally being informed of even a loose ‘schedule like’ plan.

I’m sure those pros wouldn’t appreciate being spoken about that way- and neither would you if anything you were working on ever fouled up. As always, we apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience. We hope this will be fixed soon.

Doggone, that’s Prime Time Friday night in my timezone. Oh well, I’ll just watch a couple of movies I guess…
