It’s known as the Winter of Our Missed Content, because all threads posted after a certain time were lost.
While you’re at it, read the other FAQ as well . Questions about the board belong in ATMB.
I’ll move this for you.

I believe Cecil accidentally used supplied us with his recreational hamsters, instead of the usual worker variety. Ed Zotti was cleaning the basemetn for months afterwards. At least he claims he was cleaning
Derleth You were around then, so you should have recalled that the problem wasn’t cracking but file recovery.
At one point they relied on a backup device (I thought it was a CD-ROM, but it might have been a server backup tape) which had silently overflowed its media.
So when relied upon to recover from some minor problem, the backups were all revealed to have been overflowed for three months.
Beeruser, Derleth is correct as to the cause of the SDMB going down. It was during the recovery of the board that the problem you mention caused the loss of a few months data.
Happy Holidays!
Well, great, now you’ve got me started and I can’t find the actual announcement of the day by TubaDiva. Perhaps it was erased?
It was refered to by Arnold Winkelried and kabbes in this thread :where have all the old posts gone ??
It should have been between this day of the forum list and this one.
Or perhaps I’m recalling something jdavis (AKA “jerry the tech god”) said after this post
