I’m looking for an old thread and can’t find it. Maybe it was during that time? I remember starting it when I was fairly new as a poster.
Before my time, I’m pretty sure. I seem to recall it was before I became a member (2003), so you could be right.
December 7, 2001 until March 10, 2002.
Thank you!!
It happened shortly after I joined, and I posted some of my greatest stuff during the outage. Stellar stuff-- meaning-of-life caliber stuff. Epic poetry, breakthrough analyses of the Cold War and 2000 election, and some of the sickest burns ever to grace the Pit.
Once I realized it was all gone, I decided I would only bring my B material to the Internet from that point forward.
My life-altering thread, Qadgop’s going to prison was lost forever in that disaster!
After lurking for two years, another idiot thread about lactose intolerance, my specialty at the time, overcame my concerns about the Dope becoming a time sink and forced me to join.
So what happens? The brilliant post is lost and the Dope is my greatest time sink.
Curse you, winter!
A lot of posts before that date disappeared, too. My first post, which I consider to be STILL exactly the kind of question this board is made for, is long gone.
I don’t believe I lost any posts. Or, maybe the my memory was wiped by the same event. No way to know for sure.
And I believe it is properly “The Winter of OUR Missed Content”.
We don’t really care about anyone else’s.
I remember that well. I often wandered about, just thinking about your posts and letting them dance in my brain, with a beatific smile plastered on my face.
Then, a few months later, I began to wonder if you’d been struck in the skull with a heavy object. When I saw that the deteriorated condition of your posts continued for months and years I decided not to ask for fear of embarrassing you.
Thanks for explaining!
No problem. I’m an idiot on purpose!
I.e., Don’t Worry, Be Happy.
IIRC, some of those posts had evidence where Bush the Younger admitted 9/11 was his fault, Monica’s diary notes nailed Clinton, the entire Trump family’s collusion with Russia and the Nigerian scam folks, and the truth behind Amelia Earhart’s disappearance, with a Lee Harvey Oswald connection.
Aw, yeah, there were some wonderful threads in Great Debates. “A Blueprint for a Comprehensive Peace in the Middle East”–that one was very contentious for the first dozen pages, but then by about page 13 or 14, everything just sort of clicked. Someone said we should e-mail Ariel Sharon and Yasser Arafat, but then…
And “Reconciling Special and General Relativity With Quantum Mechanics” and its brilliant follow up “The SDMB Grand Unified Field Theory!” Man, a bunch of people collaborated on those! They were all set to send that one off to Stockholm, but then…
All those posts lost, like tears in rain.
I forget what caused it, though. Was it sunspots?
My old sdmb history website had a short bit on it:
SSS:Winter of our missed content
Technically, the “missed content” was only Dec-Feb; mid Feb to March 10th the board was down.
While I’m not saying that TWOOD was an intentional act, it seems suspicious that it occurred immediately after an incredibly astute poster painstakingly pieced together seemingly innocuous info from many different threads to prove that “Cecil Adams” is the pseudonym for the Ruling Council of the Illuminati.
After all, the name “Cecil” comes from the Latin for blind or dim-sighted and “Adam” was the first man. Pluralizing Adam was a way to indicate “all of mankind”. The rather obvious meaning behind the name being that humans have been blind to the truth since the beginning of time. Why? BECAUSE YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH! The Illuminati exist to protect mankind from the ultimate truth by doling out, via their Cecil Adams cover, small chunks of truth that fool mankind into thinking we are fighting ignorance. It’s a clever scheme.
Oh, crap.
Who was it that coined the name? I want to say it was Sampiro?
