What happened to ron arad?

Arad was an Israeli AF pilot, shot down over Lebanon. I think this was over 20 years ago.
Was this guy ever accounted for? Who is holding him?

He’s certainly dead by now. IIRC, Hezbollah says they don’t know where he is (which seems like an odd claim to me, unless they got him and handed him over to the Iranians. Hezbollah would hang on to his remains if they had them, b/c they know that is a powerful bargaining tool for prisoner release).

Since there does not seem to be any great controversy (just minor quibbling) over the enswer to this question, it hardly belongs in Great Debates. Off to GQ.

(Wikipedia article.)

Why would anyone give living people back to the enemy in exchange for a corpse?

Israel just did precisely this–they handed over some Hezbollah prisoners in exchange for the bodies of the two Israelis whose capture prompted the 2006 war. Linky loo.
