Just popping my head in because I was confused about how much longer Kerry’s term in the Senate would last.
This site indicates that he was elected to the Senate in 1984. Senate terms being six years, he must have been re-elected in 1990, 1996, and 2002. That would leave 4 more years in his Senate term, rather than 2. Am I incorrect?
You’re correct. He was last elected in 2002 (he ran unopposed BTW). He will next stand for election in 2008, assuming he chooses to run for the Senate again.
Many Democrats disliked Lieberman for his poor showing during the VP debates and during the recount mess, where he basically conceded the whole thing to Tim Russert on Meet the Press. Edwards doesn’t have any of those types of negatives going against him.
And in 1980, Bush the Elder sought the Republican nomination. He made little impression on voters, but obviously a favorable one on Reagan; Reagan chose him as a running mate very soon after getting the nomination.
