I have friends who want to open up a ferry service for motorcyclists on weekend trip from Key West, not many mountains and curves in SoFla.
I’d have to agree with turmoil then the fall of Communism in Cuba.
Admitting defeat? How would lifting the embargo mean admitting defeat? I don’t get it. I know I’m not dense. At this point it would look more like mercy than defeat.
Raul Castro was there with the Gramma landing party that slid in from Mexico along with el Che and Castro. Lil’ Bro is (or was) a bit more Marxist than Big Bro. I’ve never been to Cuba, but I’d imagine with the propaganda machine there, he is made out to be quite a hero, and he was a big hero of their revolution. That’s all I know about him.
(Paraphrasing here, with quotes from US Chums:)
The “admitting defeat” by lifting the embargo basically means that they (The US) provided what they thought would be an effective “punishment”; And in the end, (40 years later) it didn’t have the “bring 'em to their knees” effect they had hoped. So removing the embargo with Castro still in power is a political black-eye to the US and a shot in the arm for Cuba propaganda. I dare say, I don’t think Cuba it the miltary threat it was in the Cold War years. And, as pointed out in the OP, The US now trades with former “enemies” and those whose political views (and human rights violations) are much different. And Cuba does commerce with everyone EXCEPT the US. (Near as I figure anyway)
OK, OK, I give. What’s the joke?
I assumes a movie or TV show, but IMDB was no help.
They are all streets in San Francisco. It is the worst kind of in-joke but really quite funny.
Twiddle
They are all streets in San Francisco.
In what sense does a street “die” or “take up slack”?
"… *What happens when Castro dies?
Van Ness and Gough take up the slack.*"
WTF? Inside joke, indeed!
Please explain more, if you’ll indulge me. WHY was the in-joke funny? Usually, in-jokes can be explained even to outsiders if context is given.
I guess that’s why Twiddle called it “the worst kind of in-joke.” Basically, it’s ony funny because it’s an in-joke.
