What has a Doper done for you? A thank you thread

Shadez sponsored me!

I’d happily email you if I could only figure out how to access your address.

You see, I’m one of the people having trouble subscribing so I don’t yet have full access to all the stuff.

Or maybe with the new format I am just not clicking on the right thing.

(That’s right I’m not very computer savy. I think my problem is my old browser, I have NN 7.1 sitting on the desktop of my G4 almost ready to go.

I hesitate because my system was down a long time and has only just been restored I really, really don’t want it to go down again.

I’m hung up on the instructions that say don’t install over other product install to new directory, that’s a little over my head but I’ll figure it out eventually. Till then I probably can’t subscribe.)

If anyone can hook me up with gravity’s email I’d really appreciate it.

Or, maybe just tell which terribly obvious thing I’ve overlooked.

Thanks
Peace

KarlGauss who saved me from certain death by way of non-Dope membership. THANK YOU

Well, Javamaven once done brung me to the Gene Autrey museum once. That was a fun day. Thankoos, Lady Java!

And Silver Fire once put my hair in pigtails. That was special.

… And don’t ask why Java’s SN is bolded while Silver wound up italicized. It’s all part of a secret code. Really. I just sent a message to KGB agents that have infiltrated the Boards…

(We strike tomorrow, comrades!)

Wow, that was two years ago! You still remember that? That was a fun day. And you know, you still haven’t been by to visit, even though I live ten minutes away.

Gravity

I think I’ve found a way to detect you email addy,

I’m trying really I am.

Stay tuned I’ll get it yet.
Peace.

elbows, Gravity’s email address is kei at sover dot net (spelled out to avoid the email harvesters).

BTW, what OS is on your G4, and what browser is currently installed that Netscape 7.1 would be replacing?

Here’s the thing.

Me and the mister are a little high up the age curve and much lacking in computer savy.

This has not, however slowed his thirst to acquire new technology.

Soooo, I have a G4 that took the kind assistance of several people to get up and going. (Great deal, second hand, switched out DVD player for CD burner, internet configged, phone line, printer, scanner, blah, blah, running OS 9.2 as X conflicts with PhotoDelux, which I like to use.)

I am anxious to upgrade to a more current browser and to install a tablet I received at Christmas. But I am going slowly for fear of screwing it up right royally.

I was without The Dope for months, and now that it works…

I am trying, at lightening speed, to figure out how to make a start up disc or maybe it’s a restore disc, so if a stumble forward and make it wrong I can reset. I’m pretty certain there is a way to do this. Maybe I should be using the word CD instead of disc on my searches, I’ll try that next.

Apologies offered in advance for how not savy we are around here.

Any suggstions offered will be greatly appreciated!

…That would be Netscape Navigator 4.77.

Sorry.

The installation instructions for 7.0 say, and I quote,

“Install into a clean (new) directory. Installing on top of released product builds may cause problems.”
I’m kind of stuck right there.

Hints? Tips? Clues?

Thanks, sunfish. Yes, my e-mail address is kei-AT-sover-DOT-net.

elbows, I have a grand total of zero knowledge when it comes to Macs, but you should be fine if you uninstall the version of Netscape that you have, then follow the installation directions that came with the new version. That way, you wouldn’t be trying to write over a previous build.

When Ziatrice was looking for a home for one of the puppies that her adopted dog had, she knew I was interested. Goliath, as anybody who has met him will tell you, is a sweet, friendly and charming dog and maybe the best thing going in my life. He has made me, and many other people happy with his playful disposition.

Thank you Ziatrice.

elbows, it’s been long enough since I used Netscape 4.77 that I don’t recall whether it actually came with an uninstall feature. If it did, you’ll find it in the same folder (directory) as Netscape 4.77 itself, in your Applications folder. If there isn’t an uninstall feature, you can just drag the entire Netscape 4.77 folder into the trash.

Netscape 7’s installation instructions are telling you that you shouldn’t install 7.0 into the same folder as 4.77. That’s easy enough to avoid - just choose to install Netscape 7 into the Applications folder itself, and not into any pre-existing Netscape folder within Applications (you should see something in the install dialog box asking you where to put N 7.0). You should then be good to go.

BTW, if you have any existing shortcuts to Netscape (like in your Apple menu, or on the desktop), those shortcuts will be broken once N 4.77 is trashed. You’ll need to make a new shortcut to N 7.0 (select N 7.0 to highlight it, then type cmd-L to make the shortcut).

Good luck!
