How’s that for the most convoluted and confusing thread title? That was rhetorical. The real meat of this thread is that this morning I was out at the park with my gal and suddenly I decided to climb a tree. I had spotted one and like a shot I was off and scurrying up the tree. It was SO much fun!!! I don’t know the last time I climbed a tree, but I definitely am going to plan to do it more often.
So what is something you’ve done just recently that you hadn’t done in a long time?
I love climbing trees, but all the trees around here are not climb-friendly. Boo.
I don’t know how long constitutes “a long time,” but after over a year of not having time to read anything non-academic, it was a relief to lose myself in a fantasy novel again. Novels with actual plots! Where the characters actually do stuff!
I also took up guitar playing again. My fingertips are quite tender but hopefully they’ll toughen up again soon.
I went to the drive-in with the Superhero on Thursday night for the first time in over two years. We saw Knocked Up and Ocean’s 13 for $18 (total), brought in our own food and wine, and had a grand time. I’m glad there are still drive-ins around.
I am in the midst of drying and packaging smoked salmon. Usually I get out of this chore when my husband is home, but he went (commercial) fishing before the fish was done cold smoking, so I get to do it. It’s smelling really good in here, and it’s going to be nice to have the fish done up and in the freezer, but my hands are going to smell like salmon for at least a week!
I recently dug out my sewing machine for the first time in years and finished a quilt I had started making in high school. I had forgotten how enjoyable making something and completing was.
I’d like to say that I’ve done something recently that I hadn’t done for a long time, but I haven’t :(. There are a number of things that I’d like to do, but just don’t get around to it. These include:
Go skiing (been about 15 years.)
Fly aerobatics (about 7 years.)
Play my guitar ( 6 months.)
Fly my radio controlled aeroplane (1 year.)
I played my flute. Gah, I sounded terrible, and I’d like to play more often, but I’ve just been too darn busy to practice. I really should make time, since it doesn’t require any special equipment (I already own my flute) or education (I studied it for years and should know how to play the instrument by now). However, I’ll also say that I have few outlets to play now–I used to jam with a bunch of folks, and would play at an open stage with them; but I moved away and haven’t found a similar group of people or open stage venue since. It is hard to work up enthusiasm for practice when your only audience is the cat.
I’ve been putting my vast collection of metro reference sources in order and entering them into a database, a project I’d been putting off finishing for at least two or three years.
When is was a kid, the idea of building and flying kites fascinated me… With nothing more to go on but library books, I tried and failed many times…
fast forward 3 decades
My niece ( 8 yrs old) asked me to build a kite (apparently her Granny (my mom) told her I used to build kites all the time). What granny failed to mention was that they never flew… (usually too heavy, poorly made, etc)
So I made a basic delta kite out of clothes hangers and a garbage bag. It flew like a dream!
For the past four Friday evenings I have gone Curling, a game that I have not played since my youth in Canada. It was a lot of fun, though a bit confusing to my body to exit the 95 degree heat to go into an ice rink. The club is starting their Fall league in September, I think I may just have to sign up for that too. I have heard that a new ice arena (which will offer Curling) will be opening about two miles from my house in September as well, so I’ll have to see if they really are close to opening their doors by then.
I haven’t homebrewed in a long time… like a couple of years. I haven’t been mountain biking in longer than that, although I have taken my bike out for a spin more recently (inside of the past year).
I haven’t replaced any parts or otherwise improved my computer in a long while. That used to be a hobby of sorts; but now that I’m not quite the gamer that I used to be, frequent hardware upgrades just don’t seem necessary.
Hallgirl1, Hallboy and I went cherry picking on Saturday. Lots of yummy cherries. I haven’t done that in about a year. (That would have been since LAST cherry season.)
We’re going on vacation in Colorado next week, and we decided it might be fun to go horseback riding (something that I haven’t done since I was probably 10). So I’ll report back if I’m not in a full body cast…
About 2 weeks ago I went for a bikeride with my kids. I’m not sure if I’ve been for a bikeride since I had kids. My daughter was nice enough to let me ride her new bike and she rode the smaller one.
I went fishing, that’s something I haven’t done in a while. A friend of mine from years back called outta the blue and said about fishing, I went, enjoyed myself even though I made it home without smelling like a fish.
On the weekend, I spent $450 on myself. I can’t remember the last time I did that! I bought a 300 gig hard drive, and bought Adobe Audition online, and spent the weekend installing XP on the new drive and setting up the programs. It works so well, and so fast! I’m happy.
Just last night I went with my Pelvic Affiliate and her two kids for…duckpin bowling! I hadn’t done that in 30 years…
We had gone to a pool hall earlier yesterday b/c my FMIL wanted to learn how to play pool (picked it up pretty quick, too!), and we saw a small, 6-lane black-lit miniature bowling alley! When we got the kids from their dad’s, we took them there and had a great time.
