Forgive me if this has been covered recently. I don’t get Board access as much as I’d like. Anyway, onward and upward.
Whaddya do for vacation this year? What are you going to do?
Hubby and I, since we hadn’t been on a REAL vacation since we were married 9 years ago, well, we were actually going to go to Spain (I took Spanish class in spring and loved it - going to continue in it as my nursing pre-reqs will allow) if our finances worked out after we bought our house this summer. However, we ended up having to buy appliances which kind of kyboshed that idea. Rats!!!
Now, instead, we’re going to drive down Route 66, starting in Chicago and seeing how far we can get. Going to try and meet up with Strainger when we go through AZ and generally, just enjoy the ride! No freeways, no fancy hotels. Just mom-n-pop places, campgrounds and the beauty that is America. If we get to CA, cool. If we don’t, that’s cool too. We’ll probably drive back a different route, possibly through Utah, Colorado and Kansas. My husband has this thing for Kansas for some reason.
I went to LA around Aug 1st for a few days & no one noticed Then I came back here & went surfing at Fullers in Big Sur, where the waves were huge & few stayed in long.
Uncle, thanks a lot! That was a great article. I ordered a set of maps from Amazon.com called “Route 66: Here It Is!” that gives you a map for each state that 66 runs through and detailed directions on how to actually find the darn thing and stay on it, plus tourist stuff.
The family and I went camping up in the middle of the state for the Fourth of July. We ate a lot of burned hamburgers and got more sun that any of us have had in ages, but we had fun. It was the first real vacation we have taken in at least five years. We may go out of town for Labor Day, but that will depend on how the finances look in a couple of weeks.
No summer vacation for me this year. The relocation from VA to FL pretty much ate all my vacation time, and now that the kid is back in school, we’re not going anywhere. That’s OK, I don’t mind… Whod needs some ol’ vacation anyway?? <pout>
Well, lessee. Three days after school ended, my back went out and I was bedridden for a week. During that week my grandfather died, and I was unable to go to the funeral. Yeah, the first week really, really sucked.
A couple of weeks after that, the fiancé and I went to Ohio to visit my relatives, including the recently widowed grandmother (we opted to stick to our original travel plans and then see her after the funeral hub-bub). It was truly a very pleasant visit, although sad for obvious reasons.
During that visit, the Llama and I drove the rental car down into Lexington, KY to the Kentucky Horse Park–a mecca for horse freaks such as myself. I relished every last minute there (and hey, he enjoyed himself as well)–trail riding, visiting famous retired racehorses (one of whom died just a week ago ), spending money and loving it.
Outside of that, there hasn’t been much actual vacation. We’ve had some fun random days–we’ve gone to Medieval Times, the Hollywood Bowl (with Shayna, in fact), Del Mar racetrack (with a friend who owns a very valuable horse, so we got to hang out in the director’s room–the super rich, here-snack-on-caviar room), a minor league basebal game, and a members night at the Natural History museum. Some pretty fun stuff in there.
Sour as the summer started, it turned out fairly nicely.
Well, I hiked Humphrey’s Peak and the Grand Canyon last weekend. I’ll be hooking up with about 15 other Dopers in Las Vegas in a week and a half. I’m hoping to meet up with BunnyGirl and her husband when they come through Arizona during their Route 66 tour. And – I just found out about this yesterday – I’m currently trying to get some friends together to go the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival in mid-September. I may go by myself if I can’t find anyone else. It sounds like too much of a blast to pass up. Then I’m getting together with family in Chicago at the beginning of October, although now I’m into Autumn, so I’ll stop here.
I think the important things to do in the summer are
Go swimming at night
For the love of God, don’t EVER miss the Perseid meteor shower (unless it’s cloudy, then go outand look at the clouds and marvel at how pretty they are because meteors are behind them
Lie out in a field when the moon is full (a gibbous moon is OK
It’s hard sometimes to take a vacation, but these are things that everybody can do.
