What I miss most about college.

Cafeteria breakfasts.

As I approach ten years being out of college i was thinking about the one thing I miss most. The top of the list of things I wish I still had in my life was a big cafeteria to go to breakfast in. Lunch and dinner sucked, as all cafeterias do, but breakfast is actually improved under mass production

Me and my friends stayed up all night playing cards, or tecmobowl or something everynight. Then at 5:30 we went to the cafeteria. It had to be open then, with all of the food types available. So everything was layed out for viking style gorging. 30 types of cereal, 15 kinds of juice, 5 kinds of potatos, 3 kinds of eggs, fluffy pancakes, spongey waffles, french toast, piles of sausages, bacon, ham, multiple syrups, Croisants, muffins, other breads, and dozens of other breakfast type things. They were all fresh made and great. We were usually about the only ones in the place, and the chef didn’t have to make more crap till the rush at 7:00, so we got to be good friends with him. He would work his ass off to try to order and make our special requests because he was so bored(crepes, eggs benedict). We’d bullshit with each other and him, for an hour our so, and he just smiled when we each snagged about 4 bagles for later.(This was a dorm of 1000 people, and they only ordered 3 dozen good bagles, so nobody else really got any ;)) Then we’d play a few more hours of card before going to bed.

Now I’m lucky if I have cereal and milk in the house at the same time, and only cook eggs, sausage, and pancakes about twice a month, and no waffles at all. :frowning: I can still find parties, and hang with my friends, and talk about pretentious stuff easily now. But I can’t get a breakfast like that without driving a couple miles, and paying 9.99 for a buffet that is all heat lamped, dried out and crappy.

Being able to choose your classes so that you never have to get up earlier than you really want to.

And tons and tons of vacations.

sigh

You know, come to think of it, you’re right.

Not having to clean up, having food on demand…that was great. The quality of the food increased markedly between my freshman and senior year. I don’t recall having any bad meals after my sophomore. That was the only time in my life I really bothered getting three meals a day, now that I think of it.

Other than that I miss being able to walk everywhere. Great way to stay in shape, plus it was cheap and I liked the exercise.

The cafeteria at my college had the best fruit dip. Ever. I don’t know what was in that stuff, but I could have eaten it with a spoon. I didn’t, but I could have. Just about everyday for lunch I’d get one of their fruit plates, which came with a variety of fruit, the magical dip, and a bagel and cream cheese. All for something like $2. Mmmmmm…fruit dip.
