The Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation…advertised the “True Spirit 2000” conferance near Washington in February at which girls wanted to become males could attend a “chest surgery” workshop. They could also learn about human “branding” and sadism
“True Spirit” is a conference for transgendered persons. The name refers to the opinion that a spirit’s gender and a body’s gender are sometimes different. (Transgendered is generally accepted to mean someone who was born as one gender but identifies as a member of the other gender. If you’re born in a girl’s body but identify in all aspects as a man, you’re transgendered. Some, but not all transgendered people undergo surgery, making them transsexual. It’s a little complicated.)
The chest surgery workshop sounds like a completely valid workshop discussing breast augmentation or breast implants (depending on weather or not it’s M2F or F2M transsexuals). These workshops are, as I understand it, merely meant to be informative. Sex change operations are very expensive and are not without risks, so knowing the steps, cost, and consequenses of what you’re getting into is the crux of thses workshops.
Branding and sadism- every gay conference I’ve been to has had workshops that deal with bondage, dominance, and sadomasochism. There’s a very large S&M community within the gay community- it should be stressed, though, that there is a comperable, though less vocal, counterpart within the heterosexual community.
S&M… well, there’s a lot of mixed feelings about it. I can’t say that whips and chains excite me personally, but whatever floats your boat. It should be said, though, that S&M is completely and utterly consentual. Most people who are doing something dangerous have a “safe word” that they use. If someone says the safe word, whatever is being done immediately stops.
These workshops usually serve as a discussion forum. Some people use branding irons on each other (it’s kind of like tattooing) during sex. (Um…ow…) But again, it’s consentual, and workshops about sex don’t exactly shy away from extremes. No, it’s not like people are going to this workshop to witness people doing the horizontal mambo with accessories.
