What is a soft-jaw diet?

I spoke with my mother today, and they’ve sent my father home from the hospital after his throat surgery about 10 days ago. She wanted to know if I could see what information might be available about what she called a “soft-jaw diet”. To me, this implies not as limited as a full-liquid, but not quite a soft diet (based on what she was saying she’d picked up for him to eat).

Knowing that he was on a feeding tube most of the time he was in the hospital, I’d lean more toward the first link, at least for a while. But, since I can’t find anything specifically about a soft-jaw diet, I thought I’d toss it out here.
I do realize that, although there may be doctors on the SDMB, AFAIK, none of you are my father’s doctor, and any questions he or my mother have should be addressed to his doctor. I did tell her this, and she said that she will call him if she needs to.

As I recall from my hospital days, a “soft jaw diet” is the same thing as a “mechanical soft diet” in which food is pureed in a blender or food processor rather so that it will not require any jaw action.

“The mechanical soft diet is appropriate for patients who are recovering from head, neck, or mouth surgery, who have dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), narrowing of the esophagus (food tube), or who are too ill or weak to chew. The diet also benefits those who have poorly fitting dentures, no teeth, or other dental problems.”

Do check with the doc, though.
