What is a "squirrelly bastard"?

I found out the other day that I’m apparently a “squirrelly bastard.” I haven’t heard this comment once in my life, but somehow seven or eight people could confirm that I indeed am one.

So, guys? Help? I hope it’s a good thing.

Well, around here, “Squirrelly” generally means flighty, unpredictable, and generally sort of bonkers.
Bastard pretty much speaks for itself.

Maybe you’re good at keeping your nuts hidden.

Maybe it’s because you always have a “shit eating grin” on your face. Which is an expression I never got.

It means that you are good at trickery, activity, slipping out of stuff, and overall a little nutty. This isn’t always a bad thing.

Don’t worry about it. I bet these people were dissing Bullwinkle and Mr. Peabody, too.

Most of the characters played by Steve Buscemi

Steve Buscemi. Don’t most of his characters go insane at one point or another? I’m thinking particularly of Armageddon, when he went postal with the machine gun on an asteroid.

I could get used to this.

“Squirrelly bastard” isn’t, in my experience, anywhere close to a complement. Squirrelly bastards may have any or all of the following characteristics - the attention span and activity of a 4 year old on crack, are not overly concerned with the finer points of property ownership, are not to be trusted with anything pointy, might make a play for your significant other in plain view of yourself and/or others, etc.

Not saying you are any of those, nor that this list is all inclusive, nor that any of these are what people meant, just that I’d not turn my back on anyone called that.

I’ll be keeping an eye out for you. :dubious:

Forumbot, I found your picture

It means “crazy.” Off-balance, unpredictable (and not in a good way).

Assuming that ‘bastard’ is interchangeable with male person; e.g. ‘silly, old bastard’, I’d go off the term ‘squirrelly’. Think of Hammy from Over the Hedge. Four year old on crack voiced by Steve Carell. Also very hairy.

I’d ask the person you heard this from. “Bastard” isn’t necessarily negative- it can be the mock-perjorative comradely phrase among men which “n*gga” is among some black men. “Squirrelly” means kinda-nutty, but could be either insulting on congenial.
Now, I’ve referred to some male friends as “goofy bastards”, in a basically congenial way.

Well, when a mommy and daddy squirrel love each but are not married and then little squirrel babies result, the babies are squirrely bastards.

Were your mommy and daddy unmarried squirrels?

Well, they seemed to be telling me with a positive connotation. Or more like a neutral “well, you just are” matter of fact sort of way. I think I’m safe enough to turn your back on.

I always took it to mean somebody who was good at getting their way (stopping just short of manipulative), or good at getting out of a tight situation.
