What is Facebook like nowadays?

I used to be on it a few years ago, but sort of fell away around the time Trump became President.after hearing stories about the proliferation of right wing stuff. But lately I’ve had an itch to check it out again. Before I do so and have my computer explode from the undoubted deluge of missed messages and such, is there anything I should know or look out for?

The same day that I wished my husband a happy anniversary I got three different ads for dating sites. I hadn’t seen a dating sight ad in years.

When you scroll through your feed, it seems that 80% of it is ads and suggestions to follow “other” pages.

What you will see on Facebook is what is being posted by your Facebook friends, therefore your experience will be determined by that.

I may have spoken too soon as it doesn’t even let me get an email prompt about my old password.

“It looks like you were misusing this feature by going too fast. You’ve been temporarily blocked from using it.”

If you’re on a PC, use FB Purity. It gets rid of all the ads, re-orders the posts the way you want them (ie chronological instead of what FB does), makes it very, very easy to add keyword filters and can knock out a lot of the other crap you aren’t interested in. For example, I don’t see any ‘suggested groups’ or ‘game invites’, someone is attending an event in the future, someone joined a group etc. Plus the keyword filters make it easy to not see a barrage of rummage/garage sale posts every weekend.
And whoever is behind it keeps it updated. Each time a change on FB’s end breaks it, he usually has it fixed within a day or so.

But also groups/businesses/pages etc that you follow.

The ONLY way I can enjoy FB (on my desktop, at least) is using the FB Purity extension. It allows you to block ads, trim out all the annoying crap, and just see the content that you want from friends and groups. Sadly there’s no phone app, but for some reason B on my phone isn’t quite so ad-heavy and annoying.

Edit:

Jinxed!

Yeah. I’ve not really ever had the negative Facebook experience everyone else seems to have. It’s always been just fine to me.

Me as well. I just use it to check out people I know and just pass by all the extra BS they throw in the feed, just like any other site. Some of the BS is fun for a minute, but I don’t go deep diving into it and NEVER touch on the political feed links.

I mostly use it to follow bands or local venues, so it works for that. I see very few posts from friends but most of them - any myself, actually - don’t really post anything anymore. It’s all ads otherwise.

I have had a FB page since 2006 but rarely ever use it. I tried deleting it once and thought it was gone but apparently I didn’t go through the entire process.

Now I just maintain it for a few friends/family members and to see restaurant/store information when I travel.

I use it very infrequently.
