What is going on with the Ender's Game movie?

I can’t find anything new about it. The Philotic Web hasn’t changed its news since February, and Hatrack River has nothing new.

I’m about to check out IMDB. That may have the answer. If not, maybe someone with better links than what I have will have the answer.

OMG there might be an Ender’s Game movie!!! Why wasn’t I informed? Well it’s good to know. Although I don’t really see big movie potential for the first book. It’s definitely more of a book book then a movie book. The sequels it seems to me would be easier to tackle. Nonetheless somebody go find links to this thing I am very excited.

This movie has been in development hell for most of a decade, I’m fairly skeptical that we’ll ever see it, despite the fact that Card himself has written several screenplays.

This is probably a good thing, as to make the film one would either need to count on finding several good child actors (finding one is usually a problem) or change the story signifigantly so it focuses more on the adults. It would be, in short, a tough book to adapt.

From your OP, it sounds like you’re more up on this than I am, but I was under the impression it’s been stuck in hiatus hell for years. Last I heard, they were casting the kid who played Anakin in SWI as Ender. That was probably 3-4 years ago.

That was the last I heard, too. I was thinking how much it would suck if they did.

I’m sure Jake’s a good kid, but his acting leaves much to be desired.

I always thought it would make a better videogame than movie.

First you have that strange dreamlike game that Ender played in his spare time.

Then you have the zero-gee skirmishing that they trained in endlessly.

Both are doable in a FPS/RPG type hybrid.

Someone needs to!!

I think it would be a great movie to do entirely digital. Like Final Fantasy, only with all the technological improvements that have been made since then. Then you wouldn’t have to worry about appropriate ages for actors or zits or only working underage hours, etc. You could show the extremely violent acts that Ender performs without traumatizing any child actors. You could far more easily give it the PG-13 or NC-17 rating it deserves while still having the kids be the ages they were in the book. The practice battles would be incredible instead of cheesy. PLEASE LISTEN TO ME HOLLYWOOD OR WHOEVER YOU ARE HOLDING THE RIGHTS TO THIS FILM!!!
DIGITAL ANIMATION!!!

I think Brad Bird would be a good director, based on what he did with “The Iron Giant” and “The Incredibles”.

Actually, I met Card at a book signing of Ender’s Shadow and he raved about Jake Lloyd. He specifically said that he’s great with a good director, but that Lucas utterly failed to direct him. It was seeing him act that made him think that the movie could be more like the book, using child actors.

A side note: he also said (at the time) not to tell him about Haley Joel Osment, becuase he refused to see The Sixth Sense (he felt it was so close to his book Lost Boys that it could never become a movie). He’s since seen the movie IIRC.

Wasn’t Wolfgang Peterson supposed to direct at one point?

That’s who’s listed at www.hsx.com, same for imdb.com.

Here’s the EG information from imdb.com. It is either stuck on permanent hiatus or beginning production.

I’ve been hearing about the movie since about 1999 or 2000. It’s not a good sign when a movie takes this long to get going.

He still is. But he decided to do Bullitt as his next project after Troy, so that pushed Ender’s Game back at least another year. It’s just as well, since following up a fantasy epic with a sci-fi epic probably isn’t that great an idea…

It’s not unusual for movies to spend years or even decades in development hell, and it’s not always a bad thing. Artificial Intelligence was in development for almost 20 years, so long that the original director died of old age!!

As long as they keep OSC far, far away from the casting decisions, it should be okay…not only did he want Jake Lloyd as Ender, he wants Dakota Fanning as Petra! What on earth is this man thinking??

I hope Petersen can shake of the stench of Troy before he starts Ender’s Game. We EG fans don’t need SciFi plunks like AI, or I, Robot (I haven’t seen this but the reviews are enough to me what it’s like).

Ditto, KGS. Cute, bad-acting kids are not what the movie needs.
