What is Golden Earring`s "Twilight Zone" about?

I like the song (the different guitars meeting at the end reminds me of live versions of “Free Bird”), but what the heck is the storyline? My guess is that it`s about a drug dealer who has just shot himself and is dying as the song plays. “When the hit man comes, he knows damn well he has been cheated” implies he was going to be executed but took his own life instead.

Anyone have a different explanation or interpretation? I heard it on the radio and it`s been echoing in my head all afternoon.

In the video, I remember he was blindfolded with both wrists tied to a guardrail or something, which would suggest that he indeed is going to be executed. Perhaps he IS the hitman.

I’ve always seen it as a song about someone crossing the line from the normal life into the shady criminal underground, and how once you enter there is never any coming back to innocent normalcy.
