Just as I was almost beginning to think of myself asgetting competent, after the KERNEL32.dll error, along came the one mentioned in the post, plus that SHLWAPI.DLL caused a stack error.
Is it possible to correct this?

Yes. Run scandisk and then reboot your computer. If the same error comes up again reinstall Windoze.
I get $60 an hour for this stuff so it’s right most of the time.
reinstall? ha! Why didn’t you suggest running SFC first?
I get $80.00 an hour, I can see why
Jeez, reinstall just for a simple DLL error? I’d try reinstalling the program this is happening in, but not all of Windows.
You may also want to see if it is some kind of background conflict. Press <ctrl> + <alt> + <delete> all at the same time to bring up the task manager. End task on everything that is listed there, except for Explorer and Systray (these are required for Windows to function).
Once that is complete, do whatever you did before to make that error come up, and if doesn’t come up, then you know that there is a conflict with another program. If the error still comes up, then reinstall the program.
>> Explorer and Systray (these are required for Windows to function).
Nope. Systray is not required and, in fact, I am not running it. many people have it because it gives you the Audio volume control but my audio card has its own control and I donot need systray. If you are having problems with anything, you can end systray and the computer will run fine.
Oh. Well, I stand corrected. But Explorer is still required.
’ But Explorer is still required.’
As is usual for lindsay, she/he didn’t say what version of windows. Plus, lindsay has never come back to repost information for us about her computer issues; but other issues, yes.
Well, gee, I’d like to thank Lindsey for opening this thread, because now somebody finally told me what Systray was for–nothing. I’m relieved, because I used to have it with Win98, but when I reformatted the hard drive and went back to Win95, there was no Systray on the Task Manager, and I was kinda worried, but not enough to start a thread. So now I know.
If anybody’s not busy, I’d also like to know what “Loadwc” and “Watchdog” do. Whenever I exit the Web (I’m using Juno Free Internet), and come back to the desktop, I notice that Watchdog is always missing from the Task Manager list. Is it supposed to leave like that? If I Restart, it comes back. Is it a Juno thing?
I was assuming that the “Explorer” meant Microsoft Internet Explorer. Isn’t it? It does seem to be necessary for Win95, because if I tell it End Task for Explorer, I get the whole Shut Down menu popping up.
Just curious.
lindsay: chances are that you’ve loaded a program that has replaced the original shlwapi.dll file with one from the newly-loaded program. You could use extract to get the original shlwapi.dll file from the windows cab. Some programs will run if their version of shlwapi.dll is in their (not windows\system) subdirectory. It maybe worthwhle to take a look in the windows\system\ subdirectory and see if there is a shlwapi.old file that is actually the original but renamed by your newly-installed program (but I suspect this is unlikely).
DDG: loadwc.exe does stuff like updating subscriptions and manipulating user profiles. watchdog.exe monitors the amount of time you spend on the internet. When you log off, it turns off.
I believe LoadWC is the program that actively checks the browser you’re using, and which is set as ‘default’.
-Sam
It probably does - it sets a number of customizations for IE.
LoadWC is a piece of crap that you should take out because it’s good for nothing. Suposedly it checks on the MS site to update your software. In practice it’s, like my old girlfriend, NBT (nothing but trouble). It’s probably starting from the register. get rid of it like i did.
Watchdog I have never seen but sounds like it could be suspicious. I would investigate further.
The explorer you see in the task manager is actually Windows Explorer in it’s incarnation as the desktop. You can start windows with some other program instead (like file manager) but for normal use, just leave it alone.
Another one you will see when you are connected (using modem)is Rnaapp. After you disconnect it stays on awhile in case you want to connect again. After a while it disappears.
Systray provides some icons like audio control, powersaving etc
I am a control freak and I do not want anything starting by itself. I hate all those programs that, when you install them, put stuff in the register so they sart automatically. You end up with a hundred things running and crashing into each other. I make a point of having as little as possible running in the background and I strat things manually as I want them or need them. ICQ is one of those. I start it when I want it.
there are a number of places where programs can start automatically when you boot the computer. Just to name a few:
Windows\Win.ini
Windows\start menu\programs\startup
Registry:
HKey-Local Machine
Software
Microsoft
Windows
Current Version
Run
HKey_Users
Default
Software
Microsoft
Windows
Current Version
Run
The computer is Windows 95, that is about all I know. It has 16 something of memory. Harold said he is going to add more memory, something I wouldn’t even know how to attempt.
The ISP is Freei.net.
What else should I report back on?
By the way, I think I am doing well just by being able to post e-mail.
Thanks, Sailor, for the info, but I’m in the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” category of computer users. Also, any Tips & Tricks that start out, “Go into Regedit…” tend to make me very, very nervous. I took over this computer from somebody who WAS in the habit of fiddling around with Rededit, System files, etc. not to mention downloading weird programs and patches and drivers from the Internet, and shoehorning them in, with the result that the computer locked up 80% of the time. Not surprising.
It was a red-letter day for me when I discovered the Task Manager and found out how to turn things off that were locked up.
So now our official policy is, "Don’t fiddle.
I had noticed that Rnaapp thing, but I just assumed it was a Juno thing.
Lindsey, what else you should post is, what software did you just install before you started getting the weird error message? If it was working OK, and then you installed something or changed something, and then started getting this error message, that means that something in the software you just installed has changed something in the main computer.
Yello, here is the update. I am using Windows 95, and have two ISPs, freei.net, and Altavista.com.
What I was doing was using search engines to look up some genealogy sources. Is this what you mean by what program am I running?
Anyway I prefer the AltaVista, but the screen would freeze. My brother said try defragment. Didn’t help.
While still trying to search the genealogy stuff, on AltaVista, there would be error messages, about invalid page fault in Kernel32.dll.
My brother said to install the Kernel32.dll from Microsoft.
Did that two days ago.
In the meantime I could not access AltaVista, it would give a message that the connection was ended because of hardware failure.
So I would go to the local library and use their computers, which is where I’d also post my questions to the SDers.
Meantime I had started using FreeI.net which takes forever to load and getting a connection is almost impossible, line busy, ‘we’re having trouble loading this page.’
Yesterday, in desperation, when I turned on the computer I tried loading AltaVista again.
This was before I read the posts about doing the scandisk and rebooting.
The connection went through just fine, and worked like a dream.
There was a message that AltaVista had made some changes and to stay online at least 10 minutes while they update it.
Freei.net was installed first, and I added AltaVista about a month later, this would have been in February.
Don’t know what made the difference, there hasn’t been any more memory added - yet - but it is running just fine.
You know lindsay, we all get messages like that sometimes & we just ignore them. Youll get a certain amount of messages like that & you can just ignore them.
you might like Free Juno from Juno.com
This is too freaky. I am getting the same error on my computer. Is this a bug??
Funny that it would happen to both our computers at the same time.
Well, not too freaky. It’s happening with my pc for the 100th time. I’ve been told to do all sorts of things fromNetscape and Microsoft and have been told to place the blame on everything but the dogs.
I have someplace close by an 800 number for Netscape and they sound as if they get this problem quite frequently.
My guess is that this is a Microsoft quirk so you won’t be able to live with Netscape and will have to run the internet contacts through Microsoft’s programs.
It freezes up the PC and only when I’m in Netscape.
If you come up with a solution, please, I want to be the first to know!
Jois
Bumping up for any other ideas. Besides trashing Netscape?
