…that was mentioned in these forums a few weeks ago? I seem to recall that it was a South or Central American plant, you could smoke it or take it orally, and it caused strong hallucinations for about 10 minutes.
If anybody knows anything about this, where can I get some?
I think you’re talking about Salvia. It’s a type of spice, I believe. You can actually buy it online, as far as I know. Just because its legal, though, doesn’t mean its not dangerous, and I don’t know anything more about it (ie, don’t take this post as advocacy of it). Check erowid.org for more information.
I haven’t seen the thread in question, but based on the description, I’d be inclined to think he was referring to ayahuasca.
First, Salvia is not supposed to be very effective if taken orally (IIRC, it must be constantly chewed on for 15 minutes or so to achieve any effect). Interestingly, salvia divinorum is only found naturally in one tiny little town in Mexico. Since it was legal, I ordered a cutting and grew it. It didn’t seem to do much of anything for me.
Now, ayahuasca, OTOH, is in a legally gray area. Traditionally, it is made from two plants. One contains either DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, or a combination of both. The other contains a short-term MAOI that potentiates the DMT orally. DMT can be smoked on its own, but must be extracted because the raw plant material does not contain enough of the chemical to smoke directly. Taken orally, it’s supposed to last about an hour. Smoked, about 5-15 minutes. Synthetic DMT enjoyed mild popularity in the late 60’s and was often referred to as “the businessman’s high” because of the short duration of the effects.
All plants that contain DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, and MAOIs are legal in the U.S. and can be ordered through many suppliers. If you probe around the web long enough, you’re sure to find one. Please note that combining the two plants or extracting the DMT IS illegal in the U.S.
The long-term effects of salvia divinorum and ayahuasca are not known. Chemically, ayahuasca is somewhat related to peyote, IIRC, but that’s not a guaranty of its safety. The active chemicals in salvia (salvinorin A and salvinorin B) exist in no other known plant outside the salvia family.
Yes, CheifWahoo, ayahuasca and yage are one and the same. They may or may not use different plants for the drugs depending on what area is in question, but the plants contain the same active chemicals.
I’m not sure if any of the three people you mentioned ever went to South American in search of the stuff. Maybe you’re thinking of Carlos Castenada. I could be wrong, though.
I did a little research for myself and it was Willliam S. Burroughs that went in search of yage. I must have gotten The Yage Letters mixed up with On The Road.
The Yage Letters is a book of correspondence between Burroughs and Ginsberg while B. is touring Central and South America.
More info (because I’m bored and don’t get out of this “class” for another hour) :
For those wondering how to pronounce some of these words (I know I was when I first read about them), ayahuasca is pronounced aya-HOO-osca. Yage is ya-HE.
I’ve read that DMT is the second most common plant alkaloid in the world, next to caffeine. I can’t determine the veracity of this statement, but after seeing some of the lists of DMT-containing plants, I don’t doubt it too much. It’s even found in some common grasses. Hell, you might have the stuff on your front lawn right now!
Of course, the amount of DMT found in most plants is so small that it makes extraction or the possibility of making a yage brew more trouble than its worth. The highest concetrations of DMT can be a found in a few select jungle plants, and in the root bark of a certain acacia tree species that is not commonly found in the U.S.
Its all well and good of you guys to espouse on Kerouac and Burroughs, but I still bet he’s talking about Salvia Divinorum. It’s the current “hot” legal high. As well, the effects are supposed to be something that he described, namely “strong hallucinations for about 5-10 minutes”. Oh well, let’s wait for him to respond.
It’s native to Mexico, is a type of sage, a member of the mint family. The active principal is a compound called salvinorin A, which is not an alkaloid, thus not related to the tryptamines.
I don’t know what plant you are talking about but I had a “friend” who thought that it would be a good idea to eat 12 hawiian baby woodrose seeds he and a friend bought at a head shop. My “friend” got very sick and very high, two things which don’t go together well. He spent 2 hours laying on a couch listening to new age music with a very sore stomach (which is worse, having a bad trip or listening to new age music). Things didn’t get better until he threw up and went to bed. It is safe to say he never ate the seeds again.
Hawaiian Baby Woodrose seeds (and to a lesser extent, morning glory seeds) contain LSA, a precursor to LSD, and some 20 times weaker than its famous cousin.
You may have gotten some seeds coated with a mild poison, intended to stop such abuse. Then again, you may have gotten some without poison but it just naturally made you sick. Most people (me for one) who try those seeds never try them again. I ended up puking my guts out for an hour and not feeling a damn thing.
BTW, LSA is classified as a Schedule 3 drug in the U.S. (same as Lortab), and, as such, is technically illegal to consume without a prescription. And let me just say you’d have to find one hell of a doped-out doctor to prescribe that stuff to you. I know Schedule 3 means that the drug has medical uses, but I’ve never heard of any for LSA. Hmm. Go figure. It’s not like a drug’s schedule makes any sense in the first place. (e.g. Marijuana - Schedule 1 = No medical uses, highly addictive [uh, are we talking about the same plant here, Uncle Sam??])
Morning glory seeds? Be very careful. These are the annual Morning glory seeds, not perennial. Plus, do NOT use Morning glory seeds you bought at the store as they are treated with some nasty chemicals that make you barf up majorly. Plant some & then use those seeds from the new flowers. whew. Some of you have some wild ideas but be careful. Same with Baby WoodRose seeds.
barring poison, the seeds can still uspet your stomach incredibly. There are soapy waxy substances in the seed itself (I believe they’re in the covering) that are really nauseating and sometimes even vomit-inducing.
Best to smash the seeds and soak them in alcohol first.
Though I don’t know for sure, if you are referring to Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors I just wanna jump in here.
Do NOT take any if these things if you are currently taking Selective Seretonin Reuptake Inhibitors like Prozac, Effexor, or Paxil. MAOI’s are HIGHLY dangerous if you are.
As someone on an SSRI right now, my doc has really put the fear of God into me regarding MAOI’s. As for the rest of you go for it; it’s your brain. But you still might to check this out. MAO inhibitors
I know you’ve said that the effect only last 10 minutes or so, but the side effects noted seem kinda severe.
As always, whenever attempting to alter your brain’s chemistry in search of a few giggles, please take care.
