Any dopers out there know much about salvia divinorum? Ever try it?
First of all, I’d like to say I am in no way promoting irresposible drug use. But I do believe that under the right circumstances, halucinogens can be very enlightening, useful drugs.
I just learned of this herb recently. It’s native to Oaxaca, Mexico and has been used in ritual ceremonies for probably centuries. It apparently has strong, short lived hallucinogenic properties when smoked. It can also be ingested for less intense, longer lasting properties. It’s still legal everywhere but Australia.
I’m also thinking back to reading Carlos Castaneda’s novels that involved extensive use of halucinogens in the Oaxaca region. It’s been a while since I read any of his books. Was this one of the drugs he experimented with? (Yes, I know Castaneda’s works have been almost universally bashed by the scientific community.)
Anyway, I guess this isn’t a real question, per se. I just want to know anything you may know about this plant and its use.
Visit www.erowid.org and lookup the various articles on Salvia.
Salvia also happens to unscheduled in the United States, so you can possess, grow, buy and use it legally.
There are several websites out there that will gladly send you Salvia through the mail in various potencys.
This is not a “recreational drug” in the sense Marijuana or Ecstasy is. It is extremely potent and has no resemblence to an ACID or Shroom trip… you need to be sitting down with a sober friend nearby.
If interested in these sorts of transcedental drugs and/or experiences there are far more potent drugs which are just as safe. Although I have never tried it because it is extremely hard to come by, the most power “earth shattering” experience can be attained by smoking a substance known DMT. It only last 15 minutes but the experience can seem to last lifetimes. Some have described the experience as talking to aliens, travelling to different dimensions or living out an entire lifetime as someone else.
It is apparently easy to grow. Also it is better smoked out of a pipe rather than ingested from what I hear. My buddy that sent me these links has done it before and said it was like a 15 minute acid trip, and that after you do it you don’t want to do it again for a long time…
To get the full effects from smoking salvia, you have to smoke a lot very quickly.
Get a big water pipe with a huge bowl, pack it full, and smoke the entire bowl at once. If you have a smaller bowl, you can try to smoke two in a row - load both bowls first so you can switch them quickly. But salvia takes effect almost immediately, and it’ll probably hit you as soon as you set down the pipe.
Unless you live way out in the sticks, you probably don’t need to order salvia online. Your local head shop may have it - you know, the place with tie-dye and concert posters in the windows and a neon sign proclaiming “Tobacco Supplies”.
To enhance the effects (and reduce the amount you have to smoke at once), some people extract the chemicals from salvia leaves… typically you see it called 5x or 10x extract, because it’s 5 or 10 times as potent. Your best bet for finding this is online, but you can make your own extract with some denatured alcohol.
Despite Salvia’s unscheduled status in the U.S., this is something that should be treated with respect. It cannot really be compared to any other substance (even acid).
I actually grew this stuff once about two or three years ago, but some neighborhood animals got their paws on it. Of the stuff I grew, I only got to smoke a little and it didn’t do a damn thing for me. No surprise. I’d read about the raw plant matter being rather weak.
I forgot about it until just recently. Last week, I ordered a gram of 5x extract from a web site. It was one of the ones mentioned above, actually. Lady Salvia. Delivery was prompt; I got my package in the mail four days after ordering.
I smoked two bowls in the space of about 10-15 minutes in a glass pipe. It burned pretty fast, so it ended up being about 5 tokes.
Hallucinations? Huh? Where? I thought I saw my miniblinds moving, but it turned out the window was open and it was just the wind blowing them. The only effect it seemed to have, both on myself and another person who smoked a similar amount in a similar time frame, was to make us feel a bit strange. Certainly not strange enough to be worth $20 a gram, though.
I haven’t decided whether to just give up, or to throw up a few more dollars for the 10x (or even 15x or 20x) extract and see if it works. If I do, I’ll have to use a bong next time and try to smoke as fast as I can.
neutron star, I have only limited experience with salvia myself, but I’ve been told that you have to kill the bowl in one toke, otherwise it’s wasted. Something about the way the heat releases the active chemical I guess, but if you relight the bowl for a second hit, the potency is gone.
Also, I’m under the impression that you need to use a torch lighter (for a hotter flame, I guess).
You have to torch it continously while smoking, ie keep the flame on it while inhaling, then extinguish the cherry. If you light it once and let the embers cook, that is how it get’s wasted. Speed isn’t important except for the fact that in a few minutes your trip will kick in.
I say go for 5x minimum to easily get the full effect.
Definitely be in a safe location and have a sober friend standing by.
