What is the breed of the black skinned chicken sold in Chinatown?

My wife bought a black skinned/black boned chicken from China Town a while back and I was wondering if anyone new what breed that it is? She says that it has medicinal properties and is often consumed by women that have just given birth. I think that its a Japanese Silkie, but I’m not sure if there is a specific type that is used. Thanks…

Are you talking about These?

If so, they may be Silkie Bantams

in mandarin, called wuguji.

oddly enough, the birds have snow white feathers.

used for soup. sometimes with herbs & ginseng but not always. at my home, we have it a couple of times a month. soup is tasty and the meat, well dare i say, tastes like chicken

Chinese have a thing about black food. I’ve had this black chicken but I’m pretty sure it’s no more nutritious or medicinal than mundane white chicken.

I think they are Chinese silkie bantams as well. Here is another link with a photo.

That’s what they look like. First photo as well is the skinned ones. Also tend to be a bit smaller than your basic chicken. Bones are black as well. Meat is whitish.

I eat these in Thailand at a restaurant that sells them as a specialty. The Thais also believe they are mysteriously good for you. The specialty soup tastes very good indeed.

Testy

So its a “White Silkie”. Thanks for the info, I thought that it was a Silkie of some type, but wanted to be sure.

Now if I could just get me one of those Indian Runner Ducks. They’re pretty cool looking. I could see myself riding around in the pick up with one in the front seat as a traveling companion

My grandmother used to have a whole colony of these bantam white silkies. Funny little guys, looked like they were wearing those great hairy chaps from the Saturday Matinee and a poofy hairdo. Definitely black skin. She gathered the eggs, about half the size of a regular egg. Seems like they were some color as well, but it’s been a long time. She never ate any of her white silkies, they were pets.

Y’know, my monitor is pretty big, is set at a high resolution and my detail vision is sorta fuzzy this afternoon…I keep misreading “chicken” as “children”…wanders off to scrub brain
