Suppose I were to eat this booger I have here on my finger (it’s ‘average’ in size), anyone have a WAG as to how many calories are in it? How about protein?
Also, how many boogers are in one serving, and what would the RDA be?
:dubious:
Follow up question: I believe I used WAG correctly because of the context I see it in all over the place, but what does it stand for? Thanks :smack:
WAG = Wild-Assed Guess. You sometimes see SWAG = Scientific Wild-Assed Guess.
My SWAG is zero.
The best evidence I could find is that boogers are made of proteins with some sugars used to make them sticky. Both proteins and sugars yield 4 Calories per gram.
But two caveats.
First, they are so small and light that they probably weigh much less than a gram, and so even if your booger were pure food it’s hard to see how you’d get even one Calorie out of it.
Second, the question is just what proteins and sugars they are. If they are not proteins and sugars for which the body already has enzymes to break down into amino acids and simpler sugars (i.e. digest them), then the booger would just pass through the intestines and contribute no caloric value whatsoever, just like fiber.
Best to just flick them away and leave them for the bacteria to eat.
Although mucus is made of mucopolysaccharides and water, your body would probably not break these down. Mucus plays an important role in protecting the stomach from autodigestion. Hence, you can eat your boogers with impunity and not have to worry about your hips becoming elephantine. Should you do so in public, however, your weight will not be the limiting factor in your social success.
