What is the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R?

I’ve tried to find the answer on the actual labeling of the DVD Rs but to no avail. They’re both the same price, have the same burn speed, and are used for the same type of storage (as far as I can tell). I’m not talking about DVD RWs, I understand that.

So, what’s the deal?

They are just different, competing standards used to store data. Many burners support multiple standards these days but in the early days, they usually didn’t and each one was vying for dominance.
