What is the Greek word for "butterfly"?

Various websites say that the name “Vanessa” is the Greek word for butterfly. Other websites say the name was invented by Jonathan Swift as a nickname for his lover, Esther Van Homrigh.

Looking the word “butterfly” up in a translating dictionary ought to settle the matter, but the only ones I can find give the translations in Greek characters, so the answer is all Greek…well, you know.

There are numerous butterfly species which have “Vanessa” as part of their name, but then, all sorts of words turn up in species names.

So: can some Doper provide the Greek word for “butterfly” rendered into phonetic English?

I don’t know Greek, but the word I got when I plugged “butterfly” into an online translator would be pronounced “petaluda.”

(I tried to include the actual Greek word, but on preview the characters turned into gibberish.)

I have no idea what the correct word is…but the people at this site do.

It’s a site for pro and semi-pro translators who are willing to answer questions for free. Just make sure you specify that you want the answer transliterated into phonetic English.

The Ancient Greek word for butterfly was psyche; the Modern Greek word is petaloudia.
