The most interesting thing I learnt here on SDBM was that if someone tells a group that they can fit their wedding ring up their nose, a huge portion of that group will then go and try it themselves.
You can ask just about anything on the SDMB and get an answer. Really - anything. Remember the GQ semen-egg discussion? shudder

Mike Nesmith of the Monkee’s mother invented Liquid Paper.
The most interesting thing I know is that any tree structure (consisting of nodes which have one and only one parent node) can be mapped to a binary tree, and retain the same traversal order.
A bird sees everything at once in total focus. Whereas the human eye is globular
and must adjust to varying distances, the bird’s eye is flat and can take in
everything at once in a single glance.
Saturn would float on water if there was an ocean large enough to accommodate it
because of its density. However, Saturn is 95 times heavier than the Earth.
According to the Bible, the Seven Deadly Sins are lust, pride, anger, envy, sloth,

The estimated weight of the Great Pyramid of Egypt is 6,648,000 tons.
Bats have a thumb and four fingers, just like people. A bat’s fingers are very long
compared to its body. If we had fingers like a bat, they would be longer than our legs.
Sharks never run out of teeth. If one tooth is lost, another rotates forward from the
multiple rows of backup teeth.
If you soak a thin chicken bone in vinegar for a day you’ll be able to tie a knot

Mosquitoes are attracted to the color blue more than any other color.
One of the bestsellers in Shakespeare’s day was a devotional book called The Plain Man’s Pathway to Heaven. This is only interesting because the author shared a name with another plain man who took a rather unusual pathway to heaven: Arthur Dent.
yup it is, and I have a pal who’s feet are bigger than mine, but my arms are longer than hers …
Not in my case, I’m 6’2" and my wingspan is 6’4"
Who???

Llamas are the same way. Also, llama sex lasts about 45 minutes from beginning to end. They do it laying down.
Llamas (and all other animals in the camelid family- alpacas, vicuñas, guanacos, and the above-mentioned camel) also walk with their same-side legs in synch.
I guess I know way too much about llamas.

Also not entirely true. For one thing, it depends on the bird (it’s generally a bad idea to generalize any large zoological category, like “a bird”, or “a mammal”, simply because there is an amazing amount of diversity present in such groups). Those which are “non-hunters” and active mostly during the day (such as pigeons and parrots) have flat eyes, but passerines and raptors have more rounded eyes (“globose” or “globular” eyes), while owls (and other nocturnal birds) have “tubular” eyes.
Visual acuity also varies, depending on the type of eye. Many raptors have the ability to focus on both near and distant objects simultaneously, but others do not. The “flat” eyes tend to have the lowest visual acuity, while the “tubulars” have the highest.
Birds and reptiles also have superior (compared to most other vertebrates) accommodation, or the ability to shift focus from near to distant objects. Avian accommodation is more rapid than just about any other vertebrate group (this is accomplished by having a softer lens), and most rapid in hawks.
I know that if the wind is just right (and there are no fish cops lurking about) that I can trap out on the wire, fly a hull right up onto the beach and step off onto the sand.
So there. And now you know.
If you are standing at the South Pole, the only direction you can step is North.

Whoops. And here I thought Arizona was one of the more liberal nitrous states.
On the Pittsburgh thing–sounds like a terrible fate (just kidding Pittsburghers! I’m originally from the DC area so I feel your pain).
Any idea what the chance of, say, myself, being currently in San Diego (if that matters), suddenly existing in Pittsburgh by way of quantum oddness at any given point in time is?
I had a source on the fact about it being illegal to sell legal things as illegal drugs…am looking for a cite. May not get one for you tonight, as I have to look for it again.
The maleantechinus swainsonii or dusky marsupial mouse reaches puberty then roots until it dies, it doesn’t eat during this period and only has one thing on it’s mind…sex, with as many other dusky marsupial she mice as possible.

I was out with my friend yesterday, drinking copius amounts of alcohol, when he said to me:
"Did you know that Badgers can climb trees?"
followed up with: "Now I just want to know why."
I have never wanted the man more in my entire life.
Not so interesting, but here’s the most surprising thing I’ve heard recently: A mere cubic metre of water weighs one tonne.
Well, it surprised me.
