Lost my shit job job in shit conditions, shitingly. And found out that Monster is utterly useless. What is the new Job site?
LinkedIn and Dice.com are both good for IT (LinkedIn is used in most industries), both sites have back end systems that when a user posts a new resume/job history/profile or updates an existing one it triggers tons of companies and recruiters who are looking for candidates and recruiters will begin reaching out. Job postings are also posted extensively on both sites and a lot of companies use them in the hiring process.
I haven"t used it myself but a friend in IT said Indeed is good.
LinkedIn is great. Since before 2007 I have never needed to cold- call to find a job. It’s either a former colleague or an inbound from LinkedIn.
Indeed is the best IMO but that doesn’t mean it’s good. All these sites do anymore is aggregate listings with many are out of date or that match a few keywords in your search to pull up jobs completely unrelated to your field.
Since the OP is looking for advice, let’s move this to IMHO from GQ.
Hacker News:
Good luck to you Wolfman. If my recent experience is any guide this is a good time to be looking in IT. If your job was shit this could end up being better.
I found my current job by creating a custom filter in LinkedIn that screened for job openings posted within the last 24 hours, and then getting up in the morning every day and applying to every new position which seemed legit, which is more or less a shotgun approach. Took just over 500 applications before I was able to get the first offer.
It’s ungodly rough out there these days, so I recommend using all of them. However, don’t post your resume or apply through them. Just identify which company has the job and apply through the company’s website directly.
IME, all of the job search boards will be skimmed by recruiters so you’ll find yourself added to their databases and start quickly being inundated by email invitations to interview. Sometimes you’ll actually get a job this way, but the bulk of them are just recruiters using a dragnet. They’ll also keep you in their database for years and spam you that long. Again, IME, actual employers with jobs to fill never rummage through resumes posted on the job boards so you will never be approached by them that way. The only way to get in front of actual employers is to apply to them directly.
LinkedIn seems to be the most effective way to find a good job via both networking and their aggregation of postings. Once you get through all the corporate marketing crap and social media content.
All the other sites (Indeed, Monster, Dice, etc) have largely gone to crap IMHO. IT has largely become this commoditized market where IT resources are basically treated like disposable cogs. Basically just a set of skills with a bill rate. So these sites have basically become nothing more than online market for third parties (recruiters, consulting firms, outsourcing firms).
