What is the Oldest Alcoholic Beverage You Own?

A net stocking of one hit schnapps bottles, Christmas season…2006 i think. I keep forgetting to regift that one.

And Special Mention: A 10-year-old regular can of Singha beer. It was one of a special series that advertised the Rolling Stones concert here in 2003. Except the concert was never held. The Sars epidemic broke out over here that year, and the Stones canceled all their remaining Asian concerts. I figure this will be worth something some day.

As well, I have small bottle of Singha beer, the old bottles, saved from about the time they switched to the new bottles. About the same age as the can, I think.

I inherited my Aunt-in-Law’s liquor cabinet when she quit throwing parties a couple of years back, and in there, there’s a bottle of Hiram Walker Crystal Palace Gin that has to be from the mid-early 1980s from the looks of the bottle (not made by Hiram Walker anymore), and some equally ancient looking J&B Scotch- the label is subtly different than today’s label.

Both are fine to drink… well, as fine as either of them ever was. The gin seems to be pretty cheap stuff, but the scotch is the same as J&B has ever been.

A dozen or so various wines intentionally cellared, as well as a big ole liquor cabinet with dozens of bottles of various liquors, a few unopened and dating back to my gf’s wedding (circa 1980ish)

I’ve read most of what Christopher G Moore (who lives in Thailand) has written. His novels always have people ordering Singha beer of Mehkong and Coke.

Cheers!!

That’s not a bad combination, Mekong and Coke. Mekong is an interesting liquor. Cheap plonk, it was marketed as a whiskey for years and years. But arguments persisted about whether it really was a whiskey since it was made from rice. Then it disappeared a few years ago, but I hear it’s about to reappear, this time marketed as a rum. Huh. But I hope it does show up again, whatever they call it. I remember good times with it, yessir.

I have two bottles of red from Portugal, vintage 1986 or '87. It’s unlikely that they’re drinkable now, but they were fine wines when I bought the original cases in Lisbon back in about 1995. One is a Garrafeira, and I don’t remember what the other is. Maybe a Dao.

A half empty bottle of Canadian Club whiskey from 1974. Opened it this February for my birthday, tastes just fine! It has a few of the cool old tax stamps on it- not rubber stamped, but almost like old postage stamps.

I had a bottle of tawny port I was given when my son was born. I drank it on his 21st birthday. He didn’t like the taste.

I also have a bottle of Bundaberg Rum red label from 1988. Back then, red label was the double over proof 76% alcohol. I think I have about a teaspoon left in the bottom of the bottle.

A bottle of 21 year aged Lagavulin given to me when I was 21.

So I guess on one view it’s 46 years old.

Not quite, but I’ve got a bottle of '66 Chateau Grand-Pontet, Grand Cru Classe Saint-Emilion.

Stored upright in my sister-in-law’s cabinet for over 20 years before I got it, so most likely a fair vinegar at this point if even that.

I have an unopened quart of Yukon Jack, the Black Sheep of Canadian Liquors, that was a gift from the local priest after I cleared title to an addition to the local Catholic cemetery in 1972. Quite frankly I’m sort of afraid to drink it and no guests have expressed any interest in it either.

A '99 Gaja Barberesco and two bottles of Elio Grasso Barolo from 2001 are the oldest bottles of wine I have.

Ha…that sucks. There’s practically no way that’s any good. Provenance can be a cruel mistress.

Now these two have a really good shot of being extraordinary. I absolutely ADORE Barolo…Nebbiolo is arguably my favorite red wine grape. And Gaja is a world-renowned producer of age-worthy wines so you’re probably good there too. So what time is dinner at your place?

FoieGrasIsEvil told me he can’t make dinner. I’m free, though!

A bottle of Ouzo I got from Greece in 1987.

There are 5 bottles of Shipyard’s MelonHead in my refrigerator at the moment. I bought six bottle of the stuff last weekend. I fully expect that beer to still be in my fridge when the sun finally implodes because there’s no way I’m drinking the rest of that awful stuff.

Yeesh – Pumpkindhead? Sure, I’m in. AppleHead, why not? MelonHead – tastes like cough syrup. Yuck!

Dump it on the roses or camellias. Or use it for slug bait. No need to waste the cooler space on inferior beer.

My parents are not drinkers, at all, but they saved all of the liquor from their wedding back in 1966. It’s still tucked in the back of the cupboard in their kitchen.

In my own house, my GF’s grandmother passed away earlier this year and along with some furniture and other items, we inherited her liquor collection. A lot of it is relatively recent (at least within 10-15 years old), but there was some really dusty stuff with yellowed, unreadable labels, and some other stuff, they smell like liqueurs, with labels in various European languages that we don’t understand. The typefaces seem to indicate that they’re from at the least the 70s, but obviously that’s not very reliable.

I have a couple of Soviet-era bottles of vodka that were acquired from the exchange student that lived with my family in 1990, but are possibly even older than that.
