The story I am thinking of was required reading in English Literature. It’s about a farming family from pioneer days. (I believe they lived in the mountains, but I am not certain on that point. I do think their lingo was mountain slang though.) The man has promised his wife he’d build her a new house, but has not yet kept the promise. He has the money to do so, but hasn’t yet. He has built barns for his animals and to hold hay, but not his wife’s dream house. When she finds out he’s building yet another barn, (a very luxurious barn at that) she decides enough is enough. Once the barn is built, she begins to move in and add homely touches. She camps out in the barn and defiantly names it her house. She cannot be budged, and eventually it does indeed become her dream house. I had thought it was called “Ma’s New House” but I cannot find it using that for a search term. Can anyone give me the author and title please?
Sounds like “The Revolt of Mother” by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman.
That’s it, thank you!
I was gonna come in here and say “Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House” by Eric Hodgins, but that didn’t sound right for a lot of different reasons.
