I’m having a hard time even framing this question (which is probably why my google-fu is so weak), but many years ago I saw a program about a group of people who’s job was to smell things. They worked for perfume companies (among others) to either quality test products or test new fragrances or some such.
It was a very well paying job because you needed a ridiculously well developed sense of smell (which only a small percentage of the average population had).
I’m trying to find out what the name of this job/job title/job description was.
I once knew someone who is a tea taster. His job title is “Tea Taster”, so perhaps the perfume equivalent is “Perfume Sniffer”? “Olfactory Artiste”? “Nasal Facilitator”?
One who creates perfumes is a “perfumier”. Which reminds me: I believe the correct word is contained in the book Parfum by Patrick Süskind, which is a hell of a read if you’re interested in the subject.
I’m assuming you’re looking for a very specific job title, but I can’t think of one.
We have people here in our QA department who do exactly what you are describing (among other things.) That particular job function is referred to here simply as ‘olfactory sensory evaluation.’
There job titles are pretty generic - QA Analyst, QA Tech, QA Manager, etc., etc.
