What is this smilie? And how is it showing up here?

This post has a smilie that doesn’t appear on our list of SDMB-available smilies. How?

Is essentially any smilie/emoji available for us to copy and paste into our posts now? Has it always been this way?

Ok, now those show up as question marks for me once submitted, even though when I pasted them, they showed up as the emoji.

How did you get it to work?

I’ll be danged. All I did was copy & paste Happy Lendervedder’s emoticons, and there they are.

ETA: They C&P into Notepad as emoticons also, although without color. They C&P as ??? into a straight ASCII editor, though.

ETA ETA: And when I resubmitted the post, they turned into ???, even if I C&P’d them again.

(NB: I have no idea why, I’m just experimenting to see what happens. HL, where did you copy them from?)

I’m copying and pasting from here. Weird thing is I can get them to work, then if I go back in to edit the post and add more, they all end up showing up as question marks.

ETA: Except that “thumbs-up” didn’t post.

Our standard smileys work by putting the code for an image on the page, and for a long time, that was basically the only way to do it. Nowadays, though, with everything using Unicode, there’s room for more characters than human languages could ever use, and so some of those characters, instead of being assigned to letters and the like, are assigned to assorted little pictures. And since everything uses Unicode, that means that you can use those emojis anywhere that you can use text of any sort.

Which does not mean that they’ll always work. No font has all of Unicode supported; there’s just too much of it, and it’s always being updated. So if you’re using a font that doesn’t contain certain characters, you won’t see them. This explains why there were some you saw when typing, but they didn’t show up in the actual post: The posts here use a different font than the text-entry box.

Its all just blocks and diamonds with question marks for me. Not that its a bad thing …

Huh. I’ll be damned. You deserve a :cookie:

That’s why I always fall back on (o)/

Apparently. Usually somewhere in the neighborhood of “avocado”…

[del]Preview messes up Unicode characters on here. You preview, it looks right, then you post, and the characters get munged.[/del]

Edit: Okay, that’s not it. But I do know that they sometimes get munged. Those ?s in the second post are all munged characters, Unicode 0xFFFD, which is basically the character for “invalid code.”

Edit 2: It’s editing that breaks it.

Edited

Huh. Does it break now?.

Yep, it broke when I edited. Maybe there’s also a browser issue. I’m using Chrome 32-bit on Windows 7 64-bit.

(I only have 3GB of memory, and the 32-bit version uses less memory. Anyone with 4GB or more was automatically updated to the 64-bit version.)
