What is this vegetable?

At least, I think it’s a vegetable.

I enjoy going to Lee’s Sandwiches every chance I get (Californians may know the chain) and every time I go I have to get their BBQ pork sandwich. I tend to pick out the cilantro and what I presume are thin-sliced jalapeños, but the rest of it I greedily wolf down.

I can identify most of what goes into the sandwich except for the white veggie that’s cut like the carrots. In the picture I linked to, it’s the bit sticking out just under the carrot. I’m pretty sure it’s not onion, but it has a sharp, almost spicy taste to it and it snaps like a carrot. I almost want to say it’s a tuber instead of a veggie. Anyone know?

Parsnip? Or a white radish? (Wild guesses; I’m not familiar with the chain.)

Maybe Jicama? Are you familiar with that?

I would say radish, which is commonly found in Japanese (Asian) cuisine. Daikon…why don’t you just ask Lee’s Sandwiches what it is?

Radish! I’m pretty sure that’s what it is, actually. I just could not think of the name.

As for asking them…I honestly hadn’t thought of that. :o

You could also ask that they leave out the cilantro when making your sandwich.

Yeah, that looks like some slices of daikon. Mmm.

Definitely looks like daikon. What does it taste like?

Yes, it’s pickled daikon (radish); the carrot is pickled as well. Lee’s is fantastic, and I remember seeing they also have a huge shop in Houston. Now I’m wishing I was back down near a Lee’s.
