What is truly the worst song you have ever heard?

Hugh. Tennille was a very good singer!

Okayyy, that should have said HUSH, not Hugh. :o

Or that one where Cher sounded like Sonny in certain verses. Not to forget You Better Sit Down Kids.

Yeah, that’s the one. God, who writes this crap?

You take that back!!

still has “Massive Luxury Overdose” in regular rotation

Apparently “No, have you looked behind the sofa?” is an appropriate reponse to the question “Have you found Jesus?”

The song with the girl hiding behind the couch is The Little Girl by John Michael Montgomery.

I must have bad taste, 'cause I like this song too.

Only “Delta Dawn”? I’m struggling to think of anything by Helen Reddy that I would ever willingly listen to again. That “I Am Woman” abomination scores heavily in the three key categories: melody, lyrics and vocal production.

The version of “Candle In The Wind” that got rushed out for Di’s funeral was the grossest, most puke-inducing instance of kissassery in the history of the craft, too. ::barf::

And an honourable mention for this piece of cutesie preachiness from the Seventies.

I own 14 of the songs named in this thread. I have terrible musical taste.

Most modern country is irritating, thanks to the glurge. The one song I truly find grating, even though most people seem to like it, is Dead Man’s Party by Oingo Boingo.

a deliciously terrible song is “boat of car” by they might be giants. One of my all time favourites.

As far as actually terrible songs that actually make the world a worse place by their existence (these songs are the ones that are catchy and commercially safe, viable, homogenous, repetitive etc) Madonna music is a good example of those ones. Great person, terrible songs.

May I present Rocky by Austin Roberts? Yipe, it’s pathetic and whiney and catchy as hell.

In a super way!! Well, all right then.

And you remember what happens in the end, right? She DIES. Dies!

No–I actually hate this song so much I love it. It was one of the first songs I downloaded back in the days before I knew Napster shouldn’t be free.

I remember seeing a poll regarding the worst rock song ever, and the winner was the absolutely awful “I Started A Joke” by the BeeGees. The first line of each verse gets worse and more melodramatic:

“I started a joke, which started the whole world crying…”

“I started to cry, which started the whole world laughing…”

“I finally died, which started the whole world living…”

Yeesh!

As for religious songs, there is an abomination I’ve heard at church which is meant to attract teens (!)… “My God is an Awesome God”. Whoever is responsible for that one should be sent to meet his maker.

Let’s make that Rocky

And who could forget:

She said, “Rocky, I never had to die before.
Don’t know if I can do it.”

Just to confuse matters, there was also a dance track called Blue by LaTour that was featured in the movie Basic Instinct. No lyrics though.

Yep. It was Yello, and appears on their album called Stella.

In our pew (2/3 of the way back – not far enough that we’re those people who always sit in the back, but not forward enough that the minister actually sees us) Mrs. Kunilou and I mutter at that one, under our breaths:

My God is a vengeful God
My God is a wrathful God
My God knows retribution’s His
When he hears a hymn like this

Preach it, brother. Elton should’ve had his knighthood revoked for that. Dude, if you can’t come up with something original (and everyone understands it’s short notice), don’t try to slap together something that was 95% lifted from your paean to Marilyn Monroe, and the other 5% doesn’t scan.

“Wahhhhhhhhhhh, close to you.
Wahhhhhhhhhhh, close to you.
Hahhhhhhhhhhh, close to you.
Lahhhhhhhhhhh, close to you.”

The Carpenters.
Blech!!
My nightmare of Hell: having to sit in a dark room with nothing to do but listen to this song for eternity.

Which - beyond its imlicit suckiness - is bad because they wrote it for a bumch of muslims and ethiopian Christians. No, they don’t know it is Christmas, you moron. They do not celebrate Christmas. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=6707293#
