I’m not really seeing the problem. The entire DC universe is already built around a godlike alien - Superman. If Thor can be accepted by an audience familiar with Superman, I don’t see why an audience can’t accept Wonder Woman if they’re already familiar with Thor.
Oh no, not my concern at all. But similar, I guess. I just think a WW movie faces the danger of feeling like already-covered territory to the casual moviegoer after they’ve already been through 2 Thors.
Even my earlier suggestion of a hearty, happy Wonder Woman. Already done with Thor.
Zoe Saldana.
Gina Carano.

I have never seen her perform (I suspect I will like her in Fast and Furious 6 when it’s out on DVD) but I concur.
Have the comics ever addressed in any form the issue that the female population of Themyscira (assuming they have SO relationships) must effectively be near 100% lesbian?
The problem with Pants to be Darkened wasn’t that it was a Wonder Woman series, it was that the writer hates women. Or maybe he just hates Wonder Woman. Or maybe he’s a lizard in a man suit who will never understand humans.
You will. You will.
The maker of Dredd and #DirtyLaundry is wanting to make an all-female ensemble action movie with her in one of the lead roles. I’m so looking forward to it.
I suppose Wonder Woman, like most Amazons, is a lesbian in the same sense as Hippolyta in the stories of Heracles’ ninth labor: Until the right man comes along and takes her girdle off. Or ties her up and rams a torpedo-shaped object between her legs. Or an actual torpedo, whatever.
Yes.
Repeatedly.
Jokes about ‘why do you think it’s called Paradise Island?’ abound.
Still jokey, but a bit less eyerolly was when Wondy was courting Tom Tresser. She gave him an apricot pit on a scratchy string, which is part of the traditional Themysciran courting ritual.
Something approximately like the following exchange happened.
Tom: But isn’t it all women on Themyscira?
Diana: Yes.
Tom: … … … So, does this COUNT if it’s with a guy?
This is how they should do Wonder Woman. Light hearted, yet tough as hell when she needs to be.
I liked the hints of the rest of the League in the sky too. Bat Signal, Superman and Green Lantern flying by.
Nice, but you have to wonder why she didn’t start the asskicking a little bit earlier.
He had to be out of it long enough to not exactly see what happened.
The fight probably shouldn’t have lasted that long, either. It should have lasted about 3 punches from WW.
Yeah, I understand the narrative reason; I meant the in-character reason.
Since the question of what she is was answered upthread, I want to address her in the Cinematic DCU. As it stands, they’ve already laid the groundwork to bring Wonder Woman into the CDCU. For those who don’t know, there was a prequel comic to Man of Steel that was part of the Walmart ticket promotion. It’s easy to find on the internet. In short, it tells the story of Kara (Super Girl) being the pilot of the Kryptonian ship and she’s the one survivor. They also hint at this in the film by showing the pods with the dead Kryptonians but showing one that is open in the background. It’s already in universe that there’s a Kryptonian with Kryptonian knowledge and technology on Earth 18-20k years in the past.
They can build on this, hopefully subtlely, perhaps just letting the audience connect the dots, by having Kara be the mother of a race of people with some Kryptonian heritage and some Kryptonian knowledge that gets distorted and lost over time but serves as a way of helping to establish some of the mythologies that are necessary for other DC characters. The Amazons and Greek Gods necessary for Wonder Woman could easily be derived from this, which would explain why she has super human strength but isn’t as strong as Superman, and perhaps her bracers are derived from Kryptonian metals not unlike the key that Clark had in Man of Steel.
Whether they use this sort of origin in the films or not, it would help differentiate from Thor and keep from bringing in too many super-powered aliens, which they’d have to do with charactes like Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Hawkman/Hawkgirl, etc.
Either way, I think they HAVE to include her if they’re going to do a Justice League. She’s not at the level of Batman and Superman, but she’s better known than any of the rest of the DCU, perhaps excluding Green Lantern with the recent, but poorly received, movie. She’s also important because she’s easily the best known female Superhero, which helps bring some diversity to the Justice League.
As for how she should be done, I agree that she needs to be somewhat light-hearted. I think they should drop the whole sexist aspect and just make her wary of the world of Men, as in the rest of the world that isn’t part of her society, rather than men specifically. I think she shouldn’t have a stand-alone movie until AFTER a Justice League one. Make it so that she only interferes with the outside world when there’s a great threat, perhaps hinting that the Amazons helped the Allies in WW2 only because of the level of that threat. Then whatever they face in Justice League could do something that releases Hades or whatever on Themyscira and give us a reason to explore that mythology and expand on her character. This would give her character a bit of mystery, and let them see how the public reacts to her to get a solid film together for her.
Regardless, the costume needs to be toned down some. They did a great job with the new Superman costume, losing the undies and adding the belt and overall design. She should keep similar color schemes, but give it a bit more of a Greek feel and lose the stars. But, if nothing else, ditch the invisible jet. I love how she was portrayed in the ADCU, which really helped me get past my previous view of her just being the token female superhero and appreciate her as a much more complex character with an interesting mythology. I’d love to see her done, but I agree that she’d be difficult to do well without changing a lot, perhaps moreso than any other major DC hero.
Aw! (Remember the old Mad magazine schtick where she went inside the jet to change her costume? Hoo ha!)
She has the strength of Heracles, but I’d visualize her more a cross between Xena and Bettie Page. If Robert Tapert, Sam Raimi and Joss Whedon compared notes, I think they could come up with a suitable Wonder Woman.
I’ve thought about that ancient Kryptonian theory as well. In fact, my strong suspicion is that’s the angle DC will go wtih for all it’s heroes. Something like the X-Men’s mutant gene, except activated by lab accidents etc.
I wouldn’t mind a more modern interpretation of the Amazons. Kind of like they are in these animated shorts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHZKIVS3h2g
And maybe, in keeping with their pseudo-plausible approach, Paradise Island is only ‘invisible’, in that everyone knows it’s there, but it’s this weird, tiny, self-sufficient matriarchal society that keeps to itself. That angle at least seems interesting in my imagination.
Hardcore fans won’t be very happy with too much tinkering with the canon, though.
I have to admit, I appreciate that she has pure brute strength and speed and is less reliant on standard now-cliché babe-fu tactics like spinning round kicks and whatnot (except when taking out the last guy when it was especially unnecessary) that would quickly get a person killed in a real street fight.
