Ha, good example! I remember the look on Michael’s face, like a bit of his soul had just died, when he was pressured into saying that. Dude, it’s not worth it, there are jobs at Initrode!
That is good theramin!
My current favorite is Robert Ellis’ “Westbound Train”. I was at a local record store, and the guy working put the A side of the single on as a suggestion. I liked it, but wasn’t totally sold. It’s a $7.99 single, after all. Even on clear vinyl, that’s pricey. I was still browsing and talking, so he flipped over to the B side. By the end I was making sure he wanted to sell it, as it was the last copy they had.
Why? Well, I’ll, tell ya: Gorgeous lyrics sung beautifully in both technique and style; tasteful, intricate fingerpicking of a very nice set of changes, finished off with great flatpicking; and an absolutely wonderful arrangement. Seriously, the arrangement is probably the best I’ve heard of a country song, ever. It builds and fades perfectly with the emotion of the song. Seriously, I mean it, listen all the way to the end. It pays off, even if you’re not into the plastic fantastic country singer/songwriter scene. I prefer the version with the full band, but he can do a damn impressive arrangement of it all by himself, if you are into the plastic fantastic country singer/songwriter scene.
corkboard and WordMan, I totally agree about GT’s version of “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” (even though, I’ll nitpick: every version I’ve heard is a medley of “House Rent Boogie” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”). It’s the song that made me respect him as a guitarist. He did the best version of “Who Do You Love” ever, but that’s difference of available distortion. That Hooker medley grooves, rocks and he makes the guitar sing and grunt all over that song.
Beautiful song, and beautiful description. Thanks for sharing. I feel the same way about Whiskeytown’s (Ryan Adams) Dancing with the Women http://vimeo.com/73122492

Right now it’s If I Needed You by Townes Van Zandt. Also his I’ll Be Here in the Morning. For all the reasons listed in the OP.
Can you handle some Latino music?
Mi corazon esta colgando es tu manos. My heart is hanging in your hands. A beautiful love duet. Has everything. I done it a few times via karaoke.
Nice. He gets good sounds out of that inexpensive Seagull guitar. That’s Buddy Miller on electric guitar - he’s played with Robert Plant and took over the TV Show Nashville’s music work from T-Bone Burnett. He’s known for playing this obscure Italian make of electric guitar, one of which he’s playing in that video.
ETA: and, yeah, Thorogood mashes House Rent into One Bourbon. I love House Rent - I still use a line from it; the one where his friend says that he can’t crash there because “it’s my wife; she’s kinda funny” and he replies “Ev’rybody Funny - now you Funny, too.” Some deep truth in that line…
Dammit. I’d gone a week without crying about a certain something, and you had to mention those two songs. Thank you anyway, they’re two of the best songs ever written.
Damn again, I think that line to myself often recently. Sometimes with a great deal of shame.
I was wondering, is that an EKO? I own one that is in pieces. The thing that really kept me from buying that Vox the other day is my plan to take it to someone to get it resurrected. I got it in pieces, and have never been brave enough to take it on. It needs frets.
That last paragraph is probably more apropos to the GOGT, but there it is.
And, Clee, yes, I’ve been a Ryan Adams fan for a bit, but wasn’t familiar with those two. Thankya.
I am sure no one will mind a slight guitar hijack
It’s a Wandre’ - here’s a clip I haven’t seen yet of him discussing it:
I clicked on the link and it was dead. Okay - here’s a clip of Robert Plant doing an Americana version of Houses of the Holy where Buddy is playing one of his Wandre’s: Buddy Miller & Wandré Guitars | MICHAEL MESSER FORUM
Wow. Oh my gosh wow. One of my favorite songs made brand new.
Revolution Road by Rocket Scientists has just take over the top spot on my Blackberry, moving Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain to the #2 spot after a couple of months there.
Wow, that has to be both the most normal looking Wandre’ I’ve ever seen. Most of them look like they’re made out of the body of an alien. That also has to be the earliest instance of an aluminum neck on a guitar.
The Church: As You Will. Was originally a b-side to one of the singles off of their classic album Heyday, sung by one of their guitarists, Peter Koppes, instead of their usual lead singer Steve Kilbey. I can see why it didn’t get put onto the original album release; no place to put it into the flow of the other songs. Simply sums up everything in a nutshell as far as the way I live my life, along with a few more specific and personal reasons, and also rocks hard in a very ‘trance-like’ groove from beginning to end.
The Naked and Famous - Rolling Waves
Why? Because it’s an awesome pop rock song.
Just heard this one. It’s lovely.
I don’t listen to much pop music but DH and I just got home from a two-week road trip so I got “caught up.”
He rarely listens to the lyrics - more of a rhythm guy. And he pointed out to me Fun’s, “Some Nights” with its sturdy drum beat.
My first response was, “What? You still don’t know what you stand for, Guy?”
Fun’s music catches with me almost immediately but doesn’t seem to have much staying power.
Another I kept hearing on the radio (we were in the Southwest) was “Redneck Crazy.” A stoopid song sung by Tyler Farr that by the end of the trip was snagging my ear every time it came on.
A guy finds out his girl is cheating on him so he’s going to drive his Silverado up to her house at night and throw empty beer cans at their shadows in the window. He’s not going to start a fight but he’s up for anything that night because she drove him redneck crazy. Classic. Only missing the train.
Sorry, no link.
The Kathy Mattea/Suzy Bogguss cover of CSN&Y’s Teach Your Children.
I only listen to black/death metal.
Favorite song/album of 2013: Isvind - “Burn the Kings”
Favorite song/album of 2012: Orenda - “Only Death Lives Here”
Been listening to black/death metal since early 90’s so I am very jaded and extremely picky, but these two albums blow my pants off every time I listen to them.
