I actually always thought it was just “in a day” until I looked the lyrics up a couple of years ago. I’m not sure why I thought it was “in a day,” as it really just sounds incomprehensible at that point, and the extended vowel clearly isn’t an “ay,” and clearly “in a day” doesn’t work (sounds more like “dah dee doo”) but I guess my brain must have filled in what it thought would logically follow “I’ll be gone.”
Hatin’ on My Sharona? Seriously? I know the rest of the song is just standard garage-band rock and the lyrics are shit, but that guitar solo. That solo isn’t just a reason for a song to exist, but an album, even a band. They record this song, they can call it quits as having contributed to the world, and should retire in reasonable luxury. I think hearing that song in 1979 is the reason why I took up the guitar as a 50-something. I wish I’d done it earlier, but I didn’t, and it was an itch I could not stop wanting to scratch.
Not actually sure The Knack qualifies as a one-hit wonder though. Thought they had another song chart - “Good Girls Don’t”. Didnt read the thread, maybe someone else picked up on it by now.
(Time passes. . . googles ensue)
It hit #11 in the USA and #1 in canada.
Yeah OK, I can see why someone would hate on these songs. The lyrics are out of a teenagers fevered sex dreams, and an immature one at that. Still, there’s a case to be made for putting the thoughts of sex starved immature teens to song, as long as you recognize them as such. The fact that both their hits revolve around that theme probably gives some insight into Doug Fieger’s mentality at the time, particularly since My Sharona is notoriously autobiographical.
In conclusion, Dat guitar solo, yo. . .
