This…absolutely. I was thrilled to see the Monte Cristo as the first response to the OP. The only exception I would take is that I prefer raspberry jam in place of the strawberry. Very hard to find a restaurant that makes the deep fried version. I almost cried when the last restaurant in town serving these closed its doors.
The original Slyman’s(they’re Coptic Christians, not Jewish FWIW) is still in business at East 31st and St. Claire. Industrial area and easy parking. I think they have the best pastrami and corned beef in Cleveland, probably the best outside of NY. I haven’t been to their new place. Don’t go at lunch time to the St. Claire location–the line is out the door to pick up sandwiches, sometimes 50+ people in line.
BTW, Slyman’s meats blow away Corky and Lenny’s, even their original location.
My custom breakfast sandwich:
English muffin with butter, marmite, summer sausage, aged cheddar, poached egg, sun-dried tomatoes, onions or onion powder, and chipotle hot sauce. All nice and warm.
Grilled ham & Swiss, with ketchup on the side for dippin’.
Cold: A perfectly constructed classic BLT.
Hot: A perfectly constructed classic patty melt.
When I’m in Chicago - a Torta Cubana from Taqueria San Jancinto in Albany Park. Long ago, I would have said the Conqueror from Cap’n Nemos, but last time I had one, they scrimped so much on the liverwurst that it was but a pale shadow of it’s former glory.
When in Kansas City, the Triple BLT with extra bacon and a lightly fried egg at the *Peanut *on Main Street. It is the single best sandwich I have ever had.
Good bread, chicken (white meat), 3 year old cheddar or older, good honey mustard. Grilled with a panini press.
OK, 31st and St. Claire is an accessible distance for me. Maybe the next time I’m downtown, I’ll swing by there.
The Loaded Breakfast Sandwich from Jack in the Box. Eggs, bacon, ham, sausage
and American cheese on toasted sourdough.
If breakfast sandwiches are considered OT, then make it a Reuben.
Hot sandwich - Thinly sliced smoked turkey, with bacon, avocado, cheese (jack or mozzarella), with mayo and mustard, on grilled sourdough.
Hot pastrami with fried onions and barbecue sauce, in a wrap.
Sundried-tomato-garlic sourdough, a chick patty (a type of faux-meat chicken that is actually very good, even for non-vegetarians), a thick slice of pepper jack, fresh spinach leaves, a tomato slice, and some good grainy mustard.
If I can only pick one, crunchy peanut butter with raspberry jam on whole wheat.
The one that a certain Spinal Tap critic liked.
The humble lobster roll, so many different ways to prepare it, but the basics must include;
Lobster meat with just enough mayo to hold the meat together, a light touch is needed, too much will overwhelm the lobster
A buttered, grilled roll, traditionally a top split New England style hot dog roll, but a grilled hamburger bun is also acceptable
Additions possible;
A dash of Old Bay seasoning on the lobster mix
Lettuce leaf, romaine works as a bed for the lobster and prevents the bun from getting soggy
Bacon (haven’t tried this but bacon makes everything better)
Hmm, perhaps I should make a BLLT this weekend (Bacon Lettuce Lobster Tomato)
BLT & E
Good crusty thick-ish bread.
Applewood Bacon - thick sliced
Thick sliced homegrown tomatoes
Over medium fried egg on top, right under the top slice of bread
Smear of mayo
Fresh ground pepper
Sliced in half diagonally so the egg yolk oozes down into the other ingredients.
Damn. Now I’m regretting being out of eggs.
Damn… I was sure that the Reuben would win out, but the muffaletta is making a hard run in my mind now. So are the various tortas (I love me a torta al pastor!).
Still, I have to say that for sheer sandwich eating enjoyment, the Reuben (corned beef, rye, swiss cheese, Russian dressing, sauerkraut) wins out.
So many great sandwiches and I only get one?
Hot muffaletta with a hot giardiniera, because I’ve been craving one for a couple of weeks. But let’s not forget the bahn mi. Or a BLT. Or grilled cheese, or egg and sharp cheddar. So many to choose from…
I’m a simple old fashioned ham and cheese kinda girl.

Only one?!? That’s un-American!
I’d have to go with a Reuben.
Or a Philly steak.
Or a roast beef au jus.
Or a Cincinnati chili cheese dog.
Or a meatball sub.
Or a … oh, screw it! Trying to select one sandwich is like deciding which girlfriend to shack up with on a long weekend!
