Alright, one more before I go to bed-figgered the bowlers have had their fun, why not the links people? While I haven’t played in c. 10 years, I did manage to get my handicap down to a 13, with an alltime low of 82. Several times during my “peak” years (early 20’s) I would have a wonderful round going, only to have it all blow up on one hole, and ruin my chance of breaking 80.
I’ve played fewer than five “real” rounds, and even then the scores were only approximate. I’ve caddied for my parents lots of times though!
I never busted into the 60s. I had a lot of scores in the low 70s . I shot 72 and 73 in Publinx tournaments. That is golf from the back tees on excellent courses set up for a tourney with absolute golf rules.
My best lifetime round is an even par 71 on a relatively easy local course. Otherwise my best score is 2-over 74 on my home course. My low nine is a -2 35.
- I’ve golfed maybe five times in my life, but I always kept score accurately while my compadres busied themselves with “improving their lies”.
When I was a teen, I shot a few scores in the mid-70s (74-76) at a relateively easy course near where we used to go in Florida.
Last year I shot a 79 (from the whites) - the first time I had broken 80 in decades.
My handicap has been hovering in the 10s for quite some time now - it is about time to drop it back into single digits…
First one to check with a score in the 60’s. I have shot 6 under 3 different times, one time it was a 65 on a par 71 course. So my lowest score is a 65. I have shot in the 60’s a total of ~50 times.
PeekerCPA is a former college golfer and mini tour player. His lowest will be in the 60’s if he checks in.
And FTR, I have had 5 holes-in-one too!! Witnessed (in the same 4-some) about 10 others.
I shot a 98 once. Normally I shoot in the mid 100 range, for some reason I get a lot of 108s. There is one course that I’ve shot in the lower 90s, but I don’t count that because there are a lot of drivable par 4s.
76 twice. Both on par 72 courses.
I’ve never played golf regularly enough to Become a mediocre golfer, let alone a good one. But I once managed a 96 at La Tourette, a course on Staten Island.
I never came close to performing THAT well again.
Over 90% of my rounds were shot on a local par-60 executive course – it makes for a nice day, but the long game suffers from a lack of practice. Because of this, I’ve always been atrocious with my woods off the tee. When I go to a regulation course, it’s all shank-shank-shankkity-shank.
Because of this, my best ever was a whopping 90.
- I shoot in the mid 90s all the time. If my short game improves for a year or two, the driver fails me badly to make up the difference and vice versa. And I was a much better putter when I started playing than I am now. But I am the proud owner of a legitimate hole-in-one: 175 yards with a 4 Iron into the wind with a lovely draw.
Hmmmm, course par under 70 isn’t “real” golf either, or is that last option strictly referring to miniature? I’ve only golfed three times, on courses of way under 70 but scored under 100 the second two times.
Broke 90 once. Once. And it was a beautiful day.
It was intended to weed out the “executive” type courses that Hal mentioned, tho he or anyone else is still free to mention scores at them anyway.
[emphasis mine]
I’d imagine that there would a lot of…colorful language heard after poor shots at that course.
I generally score under a hundred.
Of course I generally skip the back nine also.
That’s me. Because I never golf, I have no reliable consistency in my short vs long game. What’s funny is I am a really good putter once I get on the green, but that usually takes awhile. To me putting is the easiest part of the game. I routinely sink long putts. It doesn’t help my score much when it takes me 7 shots on a par 4 to get onto the green, though.
I cannot drive with a 1 wood, its a guaranteed slice into the woods. Long irons kill me too unless I get lucky. I also cannot count how many times I overshoot the green on a short chipshot.
But goddammit, once I FINALLY get onto that short grassed motherfucker, I RULE!
When I first started golfing I was excellent with the putter. I hardly ever sank any long putts, but I pretty much never 3-putted either; cause no matter where I was on the green, I could always hit that first putt to gimme range. Now that I’ve improved my long game and I can actually get to the green in regulation (or close to it), I 3-putt all the freaking time. It’s somewhat depressing, but I console myself with the fact that I’m no longer a danger to the local fauna. I don’t make a lot of birdies, but I don’t hit any birds anymore either.
About four years ago, I played a local executive course with I think three par fours, the rest par 3s. I took one mulligan (I know, I’m a cheater) and shot par. I went back the next day and shot one over. I will never forget how easy it was to play golf that day – I’d think to myself, “I better take five yards off this 9 iron,” and boom – smooth stroke, great result. I only had one improbable par save, that involved a 20 yard flop over a grass bunker to 5 feet from the pin. I doubt I could pull that off again with 50 practice balls.
My next best round was just a few weeks ago, played a great resort course in Hawaii. Ended up shooting an 80 with rented clubs. Unfortunately, I put an approach shot in the drink on #17 and ended up with a double bogey.
I’m currently a 12.8, and I’m pretty sure I will get to single digits this year. Things are just coming together nicely.
- I’ll manage to erase the benefits from the 10% of the shots that were spectacular with 20% that are going god knows where.
