Once upon a time in America
LA Confidential
Brilliant atmosphere, excellent dialogue. An intriguing convoluted plot that makes sense at resolution on first viewing, but you’ll always see *something *you missed last time.
That’s easy.
It’s been my one favorite film since I first saw it in the theater.
Quirky when Wes Anderson was still a teenybopper, warm without being sappy, some of the most gorgeous scenery imaginable, and a Mark Knopfler soundtrack.
It is Bill Forsyth’s Local Hero.
I thought I was the only one that liked that movie. You’re the first person other than me that I have ever seen mention that movie here. But…
Full Metal Jacket is the movie I would pick if I could only have one. R. Lee Ermey should have gotten an Oscar for that performance. Few if any of his lines were scripted, he did it mostly on the fly. Of course, he was more or less playing himself, but that’s beside the point.
This thread is evil and witchcraft.
Even though it’s a bit like saying that your favourite painting is the Mona Lisa, nonetheless if a gun is put to my head, Citizen Kane is my all time favourite film. Just the most beautiful, quotable, wonderfully acted, gorgeously scored film ever.
Robot Holocaust
So good.
My ONE favorite film of all time is *Stalker * by Andrei Tarkovsky. Beautifully rendered philosophical treatise masquerading as a sci-fi trek through the allegorical “Zone,” i.e. radioactive Chernobyl. I’ve seen a lot of films and I’ve got a massive amount of favorites, but this will always be the ONE.
It’s really hard to decide among the top 5. But if I had to stick a flag in the ground right now and say which film in recent memory I found most engaging and would recommend to folks for a long time to come, Me And You And Everyone We Know.
Fight Club. It grabbed me from the start, and never let go. And it’s not just the twist, Tyler makes some pretty good points for a madman. And the general idea that there may be so much more going on in your tiny little world than you’d expect …
Make that three. Vanishing Point was another superb film in that genre.
Aw, I was getting so close to the end of the thread with my pick having not yet been mentioned. It’s Serenity for me, and #2 isn’t very close.
A Tale of Two Cities.
Jeremiah Johnson
True Romance.
It’s got a bunch of my favorite actors in it, and a witty script with a good story and ultra cool Tarantino characters.
I feel an overwhelming urge to pick something different
Galaxy Quest - I know the movie by heart and I STILL laugh throughout.
Are you on drugs, Mr. Mustard? It’s a bullshit question. Nobody could answer it.
In case you didn’t gather from the above, it’s “My Cousin Vinny”.
Jaws.
The one film I can come across playing on TV and watch from any point and I never get tired of it.
Bottle Rocket
Nashville, I love that there’s about six things going on at any time.
Funny, as all my runners up have some combination of space marines, aliens, derranged androids and/or rogue robots and definitely do not feature wall to wall country music.
