When I had to use laundromats, I generally put the detergent into zipseal bags. This was powder detergent, by the way, I don’t know if it would work as well with liquid. But the price of laundromat detergent was far more than I was really able to pay at the time. I just guesstimated the amount, and took a plastic measuring cup with me.
As for the poll, we buy detergent based on price AND brand…that is, we prefer one brand, but if certain other brands are on sale or have a coupon, we’ll pick up some of the other stuff.
I voted whatever’s on sale…but I don’t buy the really cheap, dollar-store type detergents. Tried that last winter and got an itchy rash around my neck and waist.
So I stick with whatever name-brand one is on sale.
Psst! it’s Procter & Gamble, not Proctor & Gamble. Note the “e” in the first name.
I was using Kirkland powder (Costco’s brand) for my old top loading machine. Now that I’ve gotten a front-loading, low-water HE washer, I’ve switched to Tide Sports Scent liquid. Liquid works better on these low-water machines, and I really like the scent.
Tide liquid. I always have a digital coupon for it, so that makes it about the same price as any other one. I also usually try to buy it when the store has one of their PG sales as they tend to do every couple of months. I’m washing just for me, so I don’t use too much.
This is my answer. If it’s fragrance-free, I buy what’s on sale and/or I have a coupon for. If it’s not fragrance-free, I won’t take it if they’re giving it away.
I would buy whatever is on sale, but I’m forced to buy liquid cold water Tide. I don’t think it makes a hoot of a difference which brand you buy unless you’re trying to remove blood, grass, or red wine stains.
I buy whatever says free & clear on it. I live in a small town and the selection here leaves something to be desired. If available I buy whatever the green brand is.
I’m considering switching to home-made stuff. However, at the rate I use laundry detergent, it takes at least 6 months to use up a bottle of the commerical stuff. Did you know that you can get away with using much less of the commercial stuff than they recommend on the packaging? I use half the ‘recommended’ amount and my clothes still come out clean.
IIRC, Consumer Reports did a study once that showed that most people use so much detergent that you can do a load of laundry without any added detergent and the clothes will still come out clean because of the detergent residue already in them.
I use Tide, because every time I use a different brand, I get itchy. I’ve tried the “free” kinds from different brands, but they’re all more expensive and I also found that I missed the scents. I guess I’m programmed to think “clean” has to smell like “mountain spring”.
I buy the stuff at Costco when they have a coupon, and the big bottle lasts me almost a year. So far, that works for me. Maybe when I have kids and triple my laundry pile, I’ll need to find a more economical detergent, but I’m happy with my giant Tide right now.
