What kind of laundry detergent do you use?

another vote for whatever is perfume-free. i never use tide. overpriced and way smelly.

gratuitous household laundry tip: for stain removal nothing - and i mean nothing - beats zout. the stuff is AMAZING. i’ve seen it get out set-in grease stains on clothes i’ve run through the dryer more than a few times before i learned about it.

I am not picky at all, but I buy Purex because periodically Meijer has it on sale buy one/get two free. So I get like six large bottles of liquid at a time. I don’t think there’s any difference in any of the brands, and I always buy unscented and no-dye. I also wash my clothes in cold water exclusively.

Another tip: peroxide for blood. Even if you’ve washed a garment a million times. It does work best though if you get it right away. (Ladies with period-undie problems, take note.)

I had to laugh at purposely putting the smell of sports into your laundry. :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, Lisa lives in the shadow of P&G; she knows whatof she speaks.

My husband’s work clothes can get extremely dirty, and Tide is the best detergent for stain removal. I also use it for towels and socks. If I use something else, the clothes start to look dingy after a few washings. So, Tide is worth the extra cost.

For the other less-dirty laundry, I use whatever is on sale. I like to use fragrance and dye free detergents for undies.

You left out Option 17…

Hope that someone left their detergent behind at the laundramat and use that.

If not, collect all the empty bottles from the trash, and rinse them out into your washer. You’ll get a few tablespoons from each bottle for sure.

We used the eco-friendly detergents until I got pregnant and our clothes started smelling weird to me. Now it’s back to good ole Gain.

Me: I prefer Cheer, Wisk, Tide or sometimes All.

My wife insists on scent & dye free detergents. This used to mean All Free & Clear most of the time, but since we have the new baby, and the laundry requirements have gone into overdrive, we’ve gone to whatever one of those is on sale- All, Sun, Purex or Tide usually.

They all work about the same if you pre-treat your stains with something like Shout or Zout.

I don’t buy the cheapest, nor do I stick to one brand. I guess I do it pretty randomly. I buy a brand I’ve heard of, probably the one that catches my eye on any particular trip down the aisle.

I voted “Tide powder” because that’s what we normally use, but we use “Dreft” for our baby’s clothes.

Dreft about half the time; All Free & Clear about half the time. HE versions when available. Occasionally, I use the Tide HE, which bothers my skin, on other items, comprising the rest of the time.

All Free and Clear. My family growing up used Tide but I think I switched because I preferred the free/clear aspect of it. Also it used to have pictures of things like dolphins or frogs or ducks, which was something nice to look at while doing laundry.

Kirkland. I like the square buckets.

We use Tide Powder, as well as Clorox II in powder form. I only use about 1/4 to 1/2 of the recommended amount, depending on the load. For the rinse cycle, I use a cup of vinegar in place of fabric softener. The clothes always come out clean, soft, and fresh smelling.

FWIW, the scent and dye free detergents don’t seem to bother our 2 month old, so if they’re significantly cheaper than Dreft, you might give them a shot.

There is no “other” option so I couldn’t answer the poll.

I don’t use any detergent, as I don’t do my own laundry. I have a laundress who has been doing my laundry for something like 12 years now, and I have idea what kind of detergent or fabric softener she uses. I drop my dirty clothes off in a laundry bag and a few hours later I pick them up and they are miraculously clean and folded and sorted on hangers.

Yep, I use free and clear stuff for the baby’s clothes with no problem. It’s nice to not worry about separating her laundry from everyone else’s. Also, instead of Woolite or similar, I use inexpensive shampoo like Suave on my delicates. (Or shampoo that I don’t love for my hair.) Cheaper, just as effective, and I can use whatever scent I like.

I use the Method 8x super duper concentrated stuff. I like it because it works really well, it lasts a long time, it takes up very little space in my cart or on the washing machine, it can be refilled, and I’m not paying a premium for a bunch of water. Oh, and it’s super easy to measure! Basically I love it.

You can do that?? Why has nobody ever told me this??

Whatever comes out to cheapest per load, then less than what the manufacturer recommends. And I wash everything in cold water except for towels and such that get bleached.
