What kind of music do I like?

I, admittedly, have lived a very sheltered life, musically. I haven’t had alot of exposure to ‘alternative’ music forms, like electronica, techno, house, club… what’s the difference between them?

Some of my favorite bands are Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Blink 182, RHCP, Fatboy Slim, and Limp Bizkit. A friend forced me to go to a gay club once, and they were playing Techno (I think) and it sounded pretty good, but that may have just been a skilled DJ and a good selection.

Based on this, what other bands can you recommend to me?

–Tim

well, i like and listen too all the bands you mentioned, but then, my musical taste are, as my friends put it, non-existant. the only music i don’t really like is most country. anyways, here’s some other artists/groups/bands i like, hope u like.

Everclear, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Greenday, Reel Big Fish, Blur, Bob Marley, Garbage(not so much anymore), Beck, Matthew Good Band, Oasis, Presidents of the USA, Queen, smashing pumpkins, lead Zepplin, Metalica, Sloan, Regurgitator and Lavish, plus many others

those last 2 are aussie bands and hard to come by here in canada, but still good. also, all of those named have some crap songs, live with it, so do all the other bands in the world.
i hope that’s of some help, at least it’ll give u somthing to do listening to songs for a bit.

Right now Matchbox 20 is one of my favorite bands. I also really like The Offspring and The Suicide Machines.

Mystakil, 504 boys, Joe, Busta Rhymes (although I dont care too much for his new cd), 112, Destiny’s Child (just not the three songs they play EVERY SINGLE DAMN TIME ON THE RADIO!), Jagged Edge, Eminem, DMX, Wu tang, Dr. Dre and others that escape my mind as of this moment.

Can you tell I like rap and r&b?

There are a few independent bands in my area that you might like.

The first is Stunt Monkey. They are out of San Jose. They are kind of like Blink, but with more songs about nothing.

Another is Dealership. Out of Berkley. I’m not sure what to campare them too, but they are just cool.

My favorite band is Stone Temple Pilots, but you probably already know of them.

Well, I like a lot of different kinds of music. My favourite bands are a punk band; the Satanic Surfers, and Rage Against the Machine.

Punk/Ska/Emo: Strung-Out, Less Than Jake, Goldfinger, Buck-O-Nine, Good Riddance, Choke, Millencolin, Reel Big Fish, Sunny Day Real Estate, Samiam, Me First and the Gimmee Gimmees, The Clash, Snapcase.

Rap: NWA, Geto Boys, Beastie Boys

Classical/Piano: Lizst, Scott Joplin

Jazz: Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop soundtracks), Miles Davis

Alternative/Rock/Pop: Barenaked Ladies, Foo Fighters, Ben Folds Five, Eagles, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Police, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, Smashing Pumpkins, Journey, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Soul/Funk: Sly & the Family Stone, anything with Stanley Clarke playing bass

Electronica/techno: Moby (who could also fit in every other category), The Prodigy, underworld, Kid Koala (DJ from Montreal)

Well, that’s my eclectic list. I don’t know if you’ll find anything to check out in it.

I’ll second Green Day, Everclear, Matchbox Twenty, and The Offspring. I’d also recommend Third Eye Blind (their first CD was excellent), and Barenaked Ladies. BNL has a new CD, Maroon, coming out this Tuesday. Dave Matthews Band is also a good choice.

If you’re looking for Techno/Rave/Electronica, some good starters are:
Chemical Bros, Moby, Prodigy, Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, DJ Keoki, Fatboy Slim, Dust Bros

Some good ska bands(no offence silent_rob):
Hepcat, The Slackers, The Scofflaws, Stubborn All-Stars, The Toasters, The Pietasters etc.

Older, but some of my favorite, bands:
Bauhaus, Blondie, The Clash, The Cramps, Crass, Dead Kennedys, Dead Milkmen, Elvis Costello, Fishbone, The Jam, L7, New Order, Nitzer Ebb, The Pixies, The Pogues, Public Image Ltd, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Social Distortion, Subhumans, TMBG etc.

Homer,

If you like Blink 182, congrats, you have just won the Dewt Certificate of Good Taste. You should definately check out (napster has lots) Lagwagon and No Use For A Name. Also early Bad Religion try something from the album Against the Grain.

Lunasea, you forgot Minor Threat and SNFU. How about Black Flag?

Crass… now there’s a band that I’d totally forgotten about.

dewt That was just off the top of my head, if I listed all the bands I liked I’d be typing for a week.

there were two on mp3.com I liked, Ghost in the machine and trance control. I’ve gotten into a 80’s rock kick recently, so I don’t listen to trance as much anymore.

Then there’s guitar gods… Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen. Wish I could play…

hey there luna… i LUV the slackers, i’m actually going to see them in a week. their shows are unbelievable…

anyways, hmmm, i like a ton of the bands mentioned here. i’m more into ska/punk/emo/hardcore than anything else. but my tastes are eclectic as well.
i’m stuck in the 80s in the sense that i’m still hopelessly devoted to the Smiths, the cure, the pixies, new order, etc…
i luv electronic dance music (“techno”) and i go to parties (“raves”) all the time. i’m into breakbeats and house, and some drum n bass.
i would recommend anything by kruder and dorfmeister. they’re these 2 djs who spin really relaxing, dreamy kinda house and drum n bass. good background/study music…

Tim, Kurt Cobain once said that Nirvana was like Cheap Trick with more distortion (or something like that). Anyway, have you listened to Cheap Trick? Not the Flame! That song does not count! It’s not even written by the band and their record company made them record it. Anyway, I mean like He’s A Whore all the way down to the Cheap Trick ('97 Red Ant) CD, but skipping the Flame. (And I don’t really like the Top Gun soundtrack either.) I think you’d enjoy it. But, see, I don’t know why everyone doesn’t like Cheap Trick.

Also you might like the Ramones.

And do me a favor. Are you busy on the 10th? My nephew is playing with his band 15 Minutes Fast. Can you go see them and let me know how it is? Seriously, I’ll find out where they are playing if you want to go. I know it’s in KC. I think you might like them. Although he did say that this gig on the 10th is more mellowed out than what they usually play. (I can’t go because it’s too late on a Sunday night.)

Black Flag, definitely. Also, Descendents, AFI, Minor Threat, Bad Religion, NOFX, Dead Kennedys, and early Rancid. I’d also say The Misfits, but they take some getting used to. As far as the techno, house, hardcore, etc., goes, hopefully our resident expert on that, kasuo, can help you in that area.

Okay, okay, I’m not well exposed but I also know and like

Everclear, Greenday, Blur, Garbage, DMB, Oasis, Presidents of the USA, Queen, Smashing Pumpkins, Led Zepplin, Metallica (although I’ve been boycotting them since the Napster incident, but that’s neither here nor there), Matchbox 20, Third Eye Blind, Busta Rhymes, Dre, Eminem, Wu Tang, Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds Five, Eagles, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Police, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, Smash Mouth (mediocre CDs, but AWESOME live), Journey, Offspring, and Cheap Trick (I want YOU to want ME… )

I’ll have to check out Dust Brothers, Chemical Brothers, Moby, and a bunch of the other locals and nationals people listed.

SoMo, just email me with the time and place and I’ll see if I can make it.

Thanks, everyone.

Any more techno/electronica/house suggestions?

Yes, I know what a rave is.

–Tim

No offence taken. I think the only really ska band I mentioned was Buck-O-Nine. I’m more of a punk fan, myself. Though, you did just name some very good bands.

I can’t believe I left a couple of bands off my Punk list. I second No Use For A Name, Bad Religion, Lagwagon and The Descendents. I should also mention All; they kick ass (though contain many of the same members as The Descendents). Brand New Unit and Unwritten Law are pretty good. Bodyjar kicks ass. I’ll try and think up some more later.

Here’s my Audion CD playlist, and these are just the CD’s I’ve ripped so far… http://members.macconnect.com/~jonkleinow/playlist.jpg

Hey homer. I work at a house club so let me give you some good suggestions.
First on rap. If you like Wu Tnag and such you really should check out Kool Keith/Dr. Octagon/Dr. Dooom, it’s amazing stuff. I posted some of his lyrics in the rap thread in the pit.

House tends to be slower and lusher than other forms of dance music. You get more vocals, more instrumentals and such. You have things like Brazillian house, deep house (tends to be slower and sexier), tek-house (faster and more machine like), gabba house, and other varieties.

Techno is stripped down electronic dance music. More on beats and samples. Tends to be faster. You also have the crossover tek-house, detroit techno, etc.

trance can be really bad or good. Trance music tends to be more dreamy and drug like. You have progressive trance (heard frequently in clubs; paul van dyk, Digweed, sasha); cyber trance (which is closer to techno and has lots of cool beats and samples), psychadelic trance (which is more druggy, one DJ halucinagen tends to mix in pink floyd songs at intervals); goa trance (which is faster and kinda like a mix of techno beats with trance sounds),Hard Trance, and etc.

Drum and bass. Fast heavy beats lots of snares, good music for alcohol consumption. This uns the gamut from atmospheric (very romatic, good for sex), dark-tek( darker more disturding), 2-step (which is the newest form, very funky pretty cool, see if you can’t pick up some 2-step stuff), etc.

Down tempo is what it sounds like. Good chill out music

And ambient.

Of course I’m forgeting all sorts of stuff here.
I suggest you go to the following site. http://www.thump-radio.com
They have all sorts of amazing international djs broken down by catagory. You can listen to the music, decide if you like it, and then go out and get music of that genre. Try out Mystre, Zoo-b, Galen, Mars, Hallucinagen, Tracer, Andy Sine, Digweed, Dutch, Garvin Hardkiss, and others. The ones I listed are a good cross section of some of the various musics.

Some good DJs to pick up in stores.
Digwwed, Kimbal Collins, Sasha, Darren Emmerson, Medicine Drum, Dj Dan.

Hope that helps Homer. Let me know how it goes.

See I already forgot a couple.

Hardcore music is dark and heavy and scary, happy hardcore is crap :), and breakbeats differ from drum and bass.
Also check out Lorin, Forrest Green, and Xian (cheesy at first but then starts sampling R2D2 KICKASS)
