Are they legit? Or is it some other tongue and they assumed no experts would watch the movie?
Could you post a YouTube link?
There is a Roma language. I’m not sure what to call it in English…maybe just Roma. (In Bulgarian it’s called Tsiganski or, if you’re more PC, Romski.) I understand there are a number of dialects of it, some of which are mutually unintelligible. It’s pretty distinct from other Eastern European languages and its native speakers have a noticeable accent, which I’ve heard Bulgarians mock a lot. (It doesn’t take much for Eastern Europeans to mock the Roma, though.)
OTOH, plenty of Roma speak the language of their country of origin as their native language, or the language of another country. In Bulgaria there are communities of Greek and Turkish speaking Roma as well.
The script (available here) says “Romany,” that is, the Indic language of the Gypsies (Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romani_language). There are a number of dialects (usually called Dom, Lom, Rom, or variants).
That was awesomely hilarious. Thanks!
Anyway, that didn’t sound anything like the Romski I’ve heard, but it could just be because the actors were reciting words in a language they didn’t speak. It sure as hell wasn’t a Slavic language.
It wasn’t Hungarian either, which is something I might otherwise have guessed from the description.
