What Madame Defarge Has Been Up To Lately -- A Yarny MMP

Hi, I’m back!

I have two little vertical incisions and one big horizontal one, and they have staples in them!

I only looked at a couple of the pictures, Mama Tiger, but they sure look nice. Especially the FSM. The shawls are nice, too. My mother can crochet scarves, and my grandmother made afghans (I have one of them, in fact), but I can’t do a thing with yarn to save my life.

Heh. Well, I was complicit in the whole thing. That’s the crappy part about this whole deal - I can’t complain, because I have really no leg to stand on. Technically I shouldn’t get paid for the work I did here as an “intern,” because if I got paid that would make my work illegal. Of course, I’m not really an intern anyway, since I’m doing full instructor work.

So we talked about the whole oldest sibling has highest IQ thing in class, and everyone thought it was interesting but irrelevant to life in general. Which I agree with. I have trouble keeping some of my students on topic though - one student was rambling on about her grandson refusing to be potty-trained because his father was in jail. I was very confused - I wasn’t sure how this was connected to the topic at hand, if at all.

welby, that mother shoould be smacked upside the head. Honestly, what is wrong with people these days?

It’s raining! Yippee! We need it.

Special1, just so you know, I did not look up any of those answers. I’ve known that quiz for years. There are some advantages to bein’ old. :stuck_out_tongue:

welby, just day-umn! I’m glad you didn’t run over the baby and can understand bein’ all shook up. The kid’s incubator (it’s kinda hard to call someone that oblivious about what’s happenin’ to her sprout mom) should be slapped around with a 2x4 til she gets the idea of watchin’ more closely in her head.

BBBobbio now that you’ve told us all of this what are you goin’ to have for next Monday’s MMP? Maybe Opie and one of his many stoopid friends will set a barn on fire while smokin’ behind it or sump’n.

Jah what I’d like to make is a skunk shaped cover for a can of air freshener. A friend has one in his spare bathroom and I am covet it!

Snakes when you’re done with the rain, send it down south, 'k?

What beautiful work, Tigs! I sadly have no talent in that area, but I’m thinking I could crochet. My aunt Mary taught me when I was a wee lass. I could make an afghan or something. Yeah, right…

Y’all have been a chatty bunch today! I’ve been about an hour behind all day, and finally have time to post. Of coourse I can’t remember much of what I read…

{{{Picu}}} We’re here for you.

BBBobbio - you have an exciting life! I’m sorry Mrs B gave you crap for bein’ late.

I don’t think I’ve posted since Thursday or Friday. Busy busy busy! Friday I ran errands and made a pot roast. Saturday we shampooed the carpets in two rooms, plus I did 4 loads of laundry, and sorted the rest of the pictures. Saturday night we went out. First, the sports bar for the baseball game, then out to eat sushi - champagne rolls = yum! Has anybody ever had a pomegranite martini? Oh my! Then to a little club with a cover band that played stuff from Cross Canadian Ragweed and Johnny Cash and all kinds of music really. It was fun, but we both drank a wee bit too much. Sunday morning was spent in hangover hell.

By the afternoon, we were feeling more human. Mr Rebo got crazy with the chainsaw and chopped down all the bushes in front of the house. We both hated them, and since it was a coolish day, he thought their time had come. It will totally help when he’s ready to replace the two front windows with the EnergyStar ones…

It has been raining off and on for about two weeks! More this week, too! At least it keeps the temperature down, but the backyard is an overgrown swamp. He was able to mow the front yesterday, though.

Last night I made fried quail that Dad’s friend gave to us. I overcooked them, and the taste was very gamy, but Dad was pleased as punch, so that’s good. Tonight will be spaghetti and meatballs. Mmm…

MamaTigs, I love the FSM, and your laceknitting is really neat! I’m more of a cross-stitcher myself, but I might branch out into rug hooking (the wall rugs, not the floor ones) sometime soon. I’m currently working on the Norse Mythical Beasties piece that I’ve been picking up and putting down intermittently for the past year or two, and I’m about 1/3 of the way through the giant blue mess that makes up the majority of the piece. I’m contemplating doing some very traditional floral pillows for the library as a project afterward, or maybe some Scandinavian-style stuff. We’ve got a fairly modern style to everywhere in the house but the library, so it’s my place where I can do my more traditional old world-y projects that I like so much.

I interviewed over a week ago, and was told initially that I’d be told of my decision that Friday. Called last Monday, and was told I’d get an answer by Tuesday. It’s Monday again, so I’m going to wait until tomorrow to call them up, as I should have been given an answer on whether they’ll be hiring me or not already. I know it’s a bureaucratic process, but I think that I should at least have been given a definite answer after two weeks. ::crosses fingers:: The library would be better for me, and pays better by more than a dollar per hour. I’m not likely to get insurance at either place at the moment, so it’d be nice to at least be getting more for my work.

VunderBob, you always have the craziest stories. I could not do the job you are training for-- I’m too squeamish around stuff like that!

The week’s still young, Suds

Swampy, the skunk air freshener cover remains elusive. In the mean time, how about a farting poodle instead? Or a Darth Vader hot sauce bottle cover?

OOOOOOOOOOOH!!! could anything ever be jakier than those! Well, the skunk air freshener cover, yeah, but still…

Now who is it up in here that crochets?

Rebo you got me hankerin’ for quail. One of my favoritest things growin’ up was when all the 'tives got together for a quail supper. A quail supper consisted of fried quail (duh!), rice and gravy and biscuits. Pecan pie was also the dessert of choice. I wants me a quail supper now! Course it ain’t quail season and anyways, even if it was, I don’t hunt so I would be dependent on the kindness of hunters for quail which I’d probably have to clean which is just ick. Still… I want me some fried quail, rice and gravy, biscuits and pecan pie. See what you’ve done!

Good afternoon, MMPers. It is currently after 2pm and I still haven’t gotten dressed yet. Oh, Summer, you are making a completely unproductive member of society of this unemployed college student.

Mama Tigs, you truly have a knitting talent! What beautiful scarves (and awesome FSM, as well)! I can’t even comprehend how you managed to add patterns into them. I attempted to learn to knit not long ago; I don’t think I ever completed a row successfully.

Wow, Bob, I’ve never had quite that thorough a glimpse into an EMT’s work before. My cousin’s husband is an EMT, and often has some very bizarre anecdotes to relate–including one case where someone managed to nail a two-by-four into their skull!

Picu, I wish I knew what to say that others haven’t already said. The SDMB is here for you, as are your family and friends, who love you. {{{hugs}}}

Welby, that sounds absolutely terrifying. I’m very glad you were making sure to look out, because that mom obviously wasn’t. That’s a good reminder of why we need to be more vigilant when driving… And why I need to stop tearing through parking lots at 25 mph. Heh.

I would have only gotten one of the questions correct. I think I’ll go crawl under a rock now.

Well, as for news, I really don’t have much. I’ve been noticing all too well the absense of Ali around here, and with nine days still to go until he gets back, there’s really not much I can do except distract myself.

Thankfully, I recently started a perfect project for distraction; I’m planning on opening a Cafepress account! I’m creating lots of “preteen fantasy” graphic designs (elemental goddesses, fairies and the like), that I’m planning on selling on a bunch of products in a premium shop once I create a good deal of them. (I chose fairies and such because I figure, they’re easy for me to draw, much more interesting than things I could be drawing, and there’s a lot of preteen/teen girls out there in control of their parents’ credit cards. ) Since I’m unemployed again, I’m considering this an “entrepreneurship investment”. If I have to be taxed for my (eventual) profits, it should definitely count as a “job”, yes?

I made the mistake once (just once - learned from my mistake) of putting used cat litter into my compost pile. It took a year to get all of the clay balls out of there. (I figured that the ammonia addition would be good for the pile. Silly me.)

And if anyone is interested, here are a couple of pictures (on PhotoBucket) of the water damage. One of our VPs decided that he needed to take pictures instead of, oh, I don’t know, friggin’ help clean up!

welby–that reminds me of the time this mom let her daughter ride on the parkway, BEHIND (actually in front of) a tall hedge and had the nerve to yell at me, when I almost ran her daughter over. I am not expecting bicycles on my grass, out of sight, next to my hedge–the weird thing is that there is a fire hydrant there–not a good place to ride your bike. Mom said I was coming down my driveway too fast.

Um, no–since I can’t see clearly, I do not go fast backing out (who does?). Stoopit mom.

I went to the library and now I’se tahred. My daughter is moping around here-most likely some drama last night–I hate to say it, but I really don’t want to hear about it. I am somewhat tired of teenage drama.
Doggio–I’ll stick with pneumonia, thanks.

So, swampy, what color do you want your farting poodle? I’d hate for it to clash with your decor!

I’m off to lunch for bad Chinese takeaway with a former co-worker.

73 posts? I gotta keep up better than this. I skimmed and am appropriately, appalled, upset, happy, supportive and amused.

Conference is predictably dull. Well, not altogether, but enough to generalize.

Tonight, a minor league game, tomorrow afternoon, I’m meeting another Doper - Wasson lives in this town, I noticed in his profile a while back. We e-mailed and we’re meeting for a sammich and beerverage after he gets off work.

Ok, back to Bus Things…

Jah it would somehow just seem wrong to have a crocheted farting poodle in any colors but pink and white. We must have standards even for tacky.

Kat glad everything went ok! Did the doc prescribe medicinal ice cream to aid in your recovery? They rarely remember important stuff like that. Speaking of which, rigs are you remembering to take appropriate doses of your medicinal ice cream, young lady? :dubious: Also, I decree that your daughter cannot display teenage angst around you as you are recovering. Tell her I said so.

I thought that may be the case…

And I don’t think I’m all that much younger than you are, so don’t go try and kick me off your lawn just yet… (43 YO. That’s waaay older than I wanted to be!!  )

**Meli **-- even one isn’t bad. It’s bad when you think some of the questions are self-answering… (hmmm… that’s an idea. Should shove in a few questions like “how long did the Six-Day War last?” into there, just to keep people honest [Where’s the Devil smiley? Oh, right, **Mika **stole it two weeks ago…])

I’ll be 53 in just over a month, so, GIT OFF’N MUH LAWN YA WHIPPERSNAPPER! :stuck_out_tongue:

MBG that’s jake gettin’ to meet a doper for a sammich and a beerverage.

Those are some awesome scarves Tiger Matron, of course I may be biased as I have a general love of scarves. Oh, and put me down as another envier of your FSM, that is so cool.

I’m still stuck here in Colorado for another week and change. It’s bad enough that the weather has been teasing three digits since I got here, but to make matters worse my company did not get me a rental car, which means that I have to walk anywhere that I want to go in these ridiculous temperatures. The only times that I can comfortably leave the condo is after the sun goes down and most places are closed (or at least will be by the time I can walk to them).

Speaking of art projects and being stuck inside all day I have finally been inspired to start modeling on the computer again, and what with the free time I have over the next 9 days I might actually get something accomplished.

(I got six of those questions right, by the way)

I have just had a peach and banana smoothie and am content with the world at large.

I contemplated going to the beach, but at this point am too tired to bother. For some reason I didn’t sleep well last night. Maybe I’ll read some more Kushiel. Speaking of which, for some reason I’ve managed to read those books completely out of order. I bought the second book first, then went back to buy the first and third book. But I accidentally (again) bought the fourth book instead. So after reading the second and the first book (in that order) I am now about to read the fourth book before reading the third book. Ah well.

Sounds like I could go into a highly profitable business just knitting up FSMs for Dopers. You guys obviously have excellent taste.

That farting poodle cover is HI-larious! I haven’t crocheted in years, except an occasional chain for a provisional cast-on (don’t ask), but I suspect I could manage to make a couple of those for our own bathrooms. Hee! It would be the perfect addition to our actual farting dog, too.

I have had ZERO motivation today to get anything done, but I really should be working – tomorrow’s another rush bit of Congressional drivel. Oh frabjous day, calloo callay. I keep thinking that if I just knit another row, I’ll get motivated to get back to my transcript. I’m actually working on one that is not only super-smooth and going fast, but is actually long – usually the good ones are all too short. This one is wonderful, so I don’t know why I’ve got such a bad case of the don’t wannas.

Jah, have you ever seen banana fiber yarn? Me, neither. I stumbled across a listing for some on eBay, and decided to order a skein and see what it’s like. In looking around for weird yarns, I also found yarn made from Tibetan nettle plants and, of course, there’s always buffalo undercoat yarn, which is probably a lot like qiviut. And definitely equally expensive. Someday I’ll be rich and order up a chunk of both, but right now I simply can’t justify it. But $7 for a skein of banana fiber yarn? Yeah, that’s right in my price range.

I’ve gotten so far as to get your yarn in the box, taxi, and the perfect box for sending off FCM arrived today with something or other for Papa Tigs in it (probably more parts for his CPAP, they send him stuff regularly), SCL, so as soon as he empties it I’ll get him boxed up, too. Then both boxes will be on their way tomorrow. Do I need to do delivery confirmation or insurance on either of them? Any chance the box will get heisted off your doorstep, in other words?
