What makes something NSFW?

Okay, specific question is, under what circumstances is something NSFW enough to have to break the link?

I wondered this because I recently posted a video of a Bo Burnham song. I wasn’t sure whether to break the link or not. He wasn’t really using language we wouldn’t use on these boards, and there’s currently a thread with fuck in the title (which is fine. I’m not complaining.)

Do sex jokes count as NSFW enough to break a link?

Swearing?

What’s the standard?

Here’s the song (NSFW.)

Wouldn’t that be a “two-click rule” issue rather than a broken link? IE link plus a drop-down or spoiler blur (or all of the above just in case) to give it an extra step of insulation from a single mis-click?

As for NSFW, that’s always fuzzy, and probably deliberately so here like a lot of our rules. Personally (!) I don’t find foul language super offensive, but for a song, my rule would be “Is it -bleeped- on broadcast radio?”

If so, I’d probably mention it as NSFW (lyrics) but I don’t think I’d probably blur it for a formal two click. Depends probably on number and severity of the curses.

For sex jokes… almost certainly for me (!) again, and we had a (IMHO) very bad taste set of Ashoka “jokes” recently that absolutely (even more IMHO) needed it.

Lots of emphasis again on personal preferences, and the board as a whole has a wide range of opinions, but I try to keep it to the “don’t be a jerk”. The blur/spoiler options are really easy to use, so why not?

I looked at the SDMB rules and didn’t find the specific term “NSFW.” What I did find was

But some people do read the SDMB at work, so of course they don’t want to be surprised by images appearing on their screen, or words coming through their speakers, that could get them in trouble or at least embarrassed.

I asked just the same thing at one point, and the reply was something along the lines that the criterion is whether you will get fired for simple slacking off, or whether sexual harassment will come into it.

Bewbs.

Depends on your W.

In general we mostly mod potential offensive images rather than language. Nudity is an easy call. Language in a video or image will be a judgement call on a case by case basis. I would say mostly a few bad words wouldn’t warrant a two click but a warning to others would be polite.

If you are going to get fired for a random gosh darn then you should probably wait until after work to open it.

Moderator Note

While I get your point, let’s try to avoid boy’s locker room humor type of posts, please.

Err on the side of caution?

It’s what I always do. Where’s the harm?
