What makes you a cool poster here on the SDMB?
You can use thumbtacks to hang me on the wall, and I arrive with a variety pictures and neat-o captions.
On what message board? There’s no Thrusting_Rod around here and AFAIK our most prolific poster, handy, hasn’t yet reached 14,975 posts.
I think that anyone posting from São Paulo, Brazil, is cool!
From what I can tell, the basics things needed to be “cool” on the SDMB are to be Polite, Forthright, Fact-based, Fun and Engaging:
Polite - If you disagree, do so on the facts. Do not flame at a person unless you are doing so in the Pit. Manners matter here at the SDMB
Forthright - I have noticed that people who ‘fess up seem to get into a lot more interesting conversations. Scott Evil, jarbabyj, and a few others sometimes go for crude confessions (I reference Mr. Evil’s question regarding penis size - you are welcome to find the post yourself) - but most have to do with more thoughtful topics, or responses to others’ questions. A (superficially at least) anonymous board is a tool - some use it better than others. Myself? - I am far less comfortable going that far on the SDMB and look admiringly from more of a distance.
Fact-based - Let’s remember what attracted us to the SDMB in the first place. Knowing cool stuff is cool, and appropriate requests for cites are cool. Spouting opinions that are not backed up is not cool, unless they are clearly framed that way.
Fun - Showing a quirky side, making your idiosyncracies known appears to be cool - this is something I can’t really bring myself to do, given the only superficial nature of the anonymity of the SDMB. This also leads to cool posts, like One Word Stories.
Engaging - Something some more experienced Dopers told me to do was to post making direct mention of others in the thread. When you respond, use their name - ask questions to follow up. That way you come across (and are) more conversational.
That is my experience - if you do that stuff, coolness appears to await…

I rarely wear underwear, and when I do, it’s something unusual.
I have the air-conditioning turned up full blast.

Uhmmm, Cisco, it was a joke (you didn’t actually look did you?) , it was all about folks with high post counts being cooler then us ‘lil people, so if I agreed with some good advice and backed it up by invoking the name of an obviously cool poster-person I would then (by extension) be cool as well. But think about this for a sec, 14,975 posts divided by 365 days equals 41 and change posts per day, that means if or imaginary friend were to post 41 times a day 7 days a week (in an 8 hour day) he would be posting more then one time each 5 minutes, I don’t think any one has that kind of rep, I thought the silly name and the ludicrous post count would speak for themselves, Oh well. (tee hee)

I must say you were true to your handle there, I Strongly agree with what you posted, pretty much the way you should conduct yourself in real life. I haven’t been mad enough to actually flame any one person, only things or I have joined a few dog piles when someone else is being flamed, in any case I will heed your pearls of wisdom as best I can.
