What makes you a cool poster here on the SDMB?

(This is not a rant, just an observation,
it is mindless, and pointless, as well as
shameless - so here goes).

I was noticing (with some envy) how much
attention trolls get, and I’m thinking,
“gee, why don’t I troll, then EVERYONE will
know my name! I will be famous!” Right.

So the question is, do we pay more attention
to the post count, the time you have been
registered, or how many responses your posts
get? I see some who have thousands of
posts in just a few years, YIKES, that’s like
posting all day every day. I have seen low
post counts with massive responses. And I
have seen long registered low post counts
with reasonable responses. But what determins
your level of hipness here at the SDMB?

Me, I lurk 5 or 6
hours a day, only post (usually) when I have
something to say or at least a desperately
funny comment to add. Now, I have a perfectly
healthy ego, I lay awake at night feeling sorry
for the poor folks that aren’t me, and if I
don’t start getting some respect around here
(in spite of my dismal post count) I’m gonna
have to start shamelessly trolling!
I dare you to reply!
(oh look, i’m up to 150 posts!)

People say I’m cool because of my witty “pre-signatures” I leave after my name on all of my posts. Of course, they just say that. . .

Tripler
And I thought it was because of my looks.

To borrow a line from the movie Working Girl:
[ul]I am, after all, me.[/ul]
Post count? Longevity? Pah - matters not. Trolling just ticks everybody off. All the cool kids are just nice, friendly, more-or-less-normal individuals who write stuff that’s fun to read. I think that pretty much sums it up.

And Rue’s cool just because of who he is.

I am not cool at all. I am sure there will be others under me who will second that opinion. They are the cool ones.

You don’t have to hit enter
after every fifth word or so
because the board wraps
your text for you. When
you understand that, you
will be cool.

And if you troll, you’ll be banned. How cool is that?

Me, I’m not that cool. I used to be, back in the day, but not so much anymore. No idea what happened there but to be real honest, it doesn’t bother me too much. It’s quite peaceful.

It’s uncool to admit that you’re cool, so I won’t.

Big ears.

Big ears.

I think someone’s suffering from post-count envy.

i’m cool because i laugh at people who are different from me.

HA HA HA HA BIG EARS!!!

I’m cool because of my enormous penis.

I think some people are just more open and interact alot more giving the perception that they’re more “popular” on the boards. I usually don’t even pay attention to who said what - I just read the posts. In all my time here I’ve memorized the names of most of the regulars but I couldn’t tell you what most of their personalities are like. I just know:

tomndebb and chronos are extremely well informed and probably the best all around GQ answerers.

SPOOFE is a good guy to have around in a geek thread (Star Wars, video games, etc) The word “geek” being used in a positive way.

Qadgop is a doctor and a LOTR afficiando, making him useful in every situation.

Billy Rubin is funny.

Jack Batty seems to be alot like me for some reason

Fenris is a comic book god and for this I bow to him.

These are the posters that are “cool” to me. That’s only about 7 people that have really caught my attention after being registered here for over 2 and half years so I don’t expect to be noticed any time soon or at all for that matter. I think the coolness or popularity factor here is mostly an illusion, some people just have a tendency to get noticed more. That doesn’t mean the average doper is going to put any less effort into reading your posts just because [s]he hasn’t heard of you.

I’m cool… very cool.In fact, If I were to step outside right now, I’d be SO cool that If I stayed out for few minutes, I’d get frostbite!!

I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist… Its REALLY fucking cold outside.

My modesty…no wait, my hubris.
I always get those mixed up.

Oh, and I mustsay,

Gingerofthenorth Is superly gynormousely cool.
But thats just cuz shes my aunty…

Oh, and Weirddave, Hamadryad, and Iampunha are pretty cool too… but I know them personally, so you know.

So that’s what I’ve been missing all these years!

I’m not a relative of magic8ball!

hmmm. so if i marry into magic8ball’s family then i too will be cool…

magic8ball - do you have any nice looking female relatives between the ages of 20-30 who would be interested in marrying a 23yr old english web-developer?

Jeepers Wally, I never had such a response. First of all
the question was half sincere and half

As I whined I wanted to get to know more people
and, Volla!

From FairyChatMom

That’s pretty much the way I see it, BTW, this is as close to
“trolling” as I will ever get, I posted a reasonable question
that was designed to get a response. This is how you get better
known on the boards. My friend Thrusting_Rod(post count
14,975 in 1 year, go ahead do a search) said that’s the deal, if
you never post anything no one will ever know you. and make
sure it’s a decent read.

From Winston Smith

'Tis true enough I guess, I just want to know, though, if we
are cool because of our high post count, OR, do we have a
high post count because we are cool?
(neat, now I have 151 posts!)

From Manduck

Thought I’m sure some here are disappointed, I just wanted
to take the time to say thank you for NOT posting a link
proving this claim.

From Cisco

I have gotten to know most of those names, except
Jack Batty. I also remember lots of other names because they
stuck out or the writing made particular sense (yours included).::Janx
shamelessly sucks up to veteran poster::
People often mix me up with Jinx

From RTFirefly in the above link

Now, you gotta admit * that*is
pretty cool.

From Silver Fire

About my psychotic typing style: I know I don’t need
a hard return on each line, and I know the flow is
annoying to look at/follow and I’m sorry,
but I’m doing this for YOU.(see how cool I am)

Lemmee 'splane: I cant spell for dog doo, so I write my
responses on my e-mail program in order to correct the
spelling then cut and paste it to the board. that’s why the
funkey format, I also do this so I have a back up
in case the hamsters eat my post. if there is some suggestion
as to how to pre-format (short of actually learning how to spell that is)
for the board I’m all fingers.

Use MS Word. It won’t wrap the text.

Don’t know. As much as I post, I think I’m more well-known for meetings IRL. I just seem to get along with people better personally than on the eeeentah-net.
